Hi,

Dad is finally coming over to the dark side of mountain biking, the FS and is wanting advice.

He likes light bikes, which I am clueless on (the bike i enter XC races on is 20kg+)

He likes the look of the spec

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... e-ec024992

There is also a 29" version

www.evanscycles.com%2Fproducts%2Fspecia ... e-ec026100

Does anyone know bikes at a similar level?

Looking at a full squish bike, 120mm+ travel that is LIGHT.

Any suggestions? :?:

Spark is the obvious choice if weight's a factor. Fuel EX, there's plenty of options.

If it's for racing why 120mm though. 100mm bikes open other options, Epic, Top Fuel, Anthem etc.

The bike I race on is heavy, so I know nothing about light bikes.

He races on his s-works HT.

This is for his every day bike.

Will look up the spark and fuel, thx.

You enter XC races on a 20kg+ bike?

    Glutton for punishment?

    I never said I won ;-)

I enter races on the lightest bike I own.
I only have 1 bike, therefore I race XC on my Niner WFO/Dorado.

You would be surprised how many people I can take on the DHs, almost as many as take me on the climbs =-)

You may guess I am in races to have fun, not to win.

awesome spec and not as dear as the Spesh.

The strive may not be ideal for xc but then you could loot at

Really cheap for the spec you get....

    hope this helps

Have a look at the Cube AMS Pro 110 range of bikes

I have last years AMS 100 R1, perfect for endurance racing, which is what I use it for

Lightweight, fast, well specced, well built & great value

Have you actually ridden one, or seen one in the flesh? Spec may be good, frame might be utter utter shite.

Canyon nerve was trail bike of the year and won numerous bike tests.
Not to sure about the Strive. Will have to wait and see as its new for 2011. Geometry looks great so no reason for the bike to be rubbish.
Canyon have a good name in Europe but are only starting out in the UK market just now....

If you want to try the bike before you buy then the only way you can do it is if you know someone who has one or if you go to Germany.
If you know what angles you want and what spec your looking for then you won't find a cheaper bike with the same spec unless it's at a police auction etc.....

MBUK and What mountain bike gave the bikes good reveiws so I'm not going to argue with them.....

    yeehaamcgee- trails not "trials".

I think the bike mags would have a better idea of what bike is best value for money as they ride more bikes then any of us.

cavegiant- Glad he got the Spesh, its a really good bike! Hope he has fun with it.

I have owned a Canyon Nerve for the best part of 3 years so feel I can add something to this discussion. Whilst I agree it’s a good bike and great VFM it’s certainly not without fault. The quality of the paint on mine is not great and as far as ride goes it is competent but certainly no better than anything else out there. I understand the new bike has been revised since then but the angles and pivot positions seem to be similar to my bike.

I have previously owned a Giant Anthem which the Canyon replaced. Considering the Giant had 40mm less travel than the Canyon I would say they were equal as far as descending poise but the giant pedalled considerably better. It was also a fair bit lighter. As well as these bikes I have also had many hours riding a specialized stumpjumper and a trek Fuel EX, both of which I would rate higher than the Canyon.

In the end the deciding factor for me in purchasing the Canyon was the price and level of components. At the time it worked out almost half the price of a similar spec major brand. I figured if the frame was no good I could replace it and still be better off.

I think people would generally be pleased with the canyon but my opinion is it’s certainly not the be all and end all of bikes as the review suggests. Once again I accept it is a newer model but from research it would not seem as a great deal has changed.

people always say the spark is a race bike but I've never raced mine

Not really, they all have 5" forks except the RC, 180 front rotors, 2.25" tyres etc. They're light, but they're far from a pure race bike.

tbh i wouldn't consider mine as a "light" bike as it has the alu frame
