Which Tourer / carthorse?

Watcha all,

I'm toying with the idea of a new bike, and so far the only gap in my collection is a bit of a dogsbody / touring bike.

Currently I have:-

- A road bike - A beautiful (to me) italian steel racer. I love riding it, but hate inflicting wet and salty roads on its gleaming chromeness

- An off road bike. An old(ish) Claud Butler Cape Wrath. Still rides well, nice and firm footed in the winters snow.

- A fixed wheel (Charge Plug). Originally bought for training \ commuting purposes.

I only have space for 3 bikes and as much as I still like the Plug, I'm thinking it might be the one to get rid of, my commutes has changed a bit since I bought it...

My commute now involves additional passengers either on a child seat or a trailer. This winter has really highlighted to me that to carry the kid (soon to be kids) safely / comfortably for me I do need to fill a gap. I don't like using my road bike or the Plug with either the child seat or trailer, I just don't feel I have the control. So it's over to the off road bike which is bloody heavy.

Ideally I'd like something roady, but strong / stable enough to feel safe under loads, a more relaxed position would also help. A touring bike seems to be the most likely answer, but I've no idea what to look for.

Like I said, I'd be happy selling the plug for a little £££ and also garage space. I would be looking to use the C2W scheme, so what makes / models should I be looking at?

Thanks for any suggestions / ideas.

    Pompetamine versa drop.

11spd hub gear for low maintanence. Loads of gears and disc brakes. Run it with fatish tyres adn you've got a lightish perfect hack bike.

Wide bars (drop or flat) helps with loads.
  • Hmmm, Pompetamine...

I did dally with the idea of a pompino when I was buying my fixed. I LOVE the idea of the hub gears.

It seems as if it'll take a rack, any ideas about a rack and mudguards? What about the geometry / ride, would it be reasonable for long rides?

I'm kind of wanting the bike to scratch 2 itches. The daily (dirty) commute and nice long rides..

Oh and I really want the glow in the dark white version!
  • Cyclocross bike... I ride a Kona Jake the Snake and would recommend that. It's not hub gears but sounds like it would check your boxes.

I've got a Thorn Raven Tour which is great with my toddler in a child seat on the back. I've got wide flat bars and a Rohloff hub on the bike. Fab for child transport. It's also great for long distance work.
