schrader vs presta - your opinions

Hi all
Gone through 6 presta valve inner tubes in the last 12 months and only one was due to a unrepairable puncture , the others were all valve failures , and these were good quality continental jobbies @ £6 each.
So decided to switch to car type valve tubes which seem more robust in the valve dept.
Obviously have to drill open the rim holes a bit but no big deal.
Just bought 2 tubes from tesco @ £1.80 each so i'll give them a go and see if they fair better than ones costing 2/3 times more.
Anyone else use them and have pro's / con's / opinions / experiences to share ?

Prefer Presta meself don't know what it is about Schrader valves they just scream 'BSO' IMO0

I would suggest that all those valve failures are due to poor handling or fitting, or maybe a rough edge around the inside of the valve hole and / or poor rim tape. Been using presta for years without problem.0

I reckon he's right. Once the valve came right out and got lost, but that's about the only Presta-specific problem I can ever recall. And against that a mate had a dodgy Schrader valve that wouldn't go down.
I wouldn't be bothered one way or the other though really, it just so happens that all my (grown up) bikes have come with Presta.0 -

filed out rough edge on one of the wheel rims when spotted on the first tube change , certainly not the cause of subsequent failures.
And there's not much to go wrong on the fitting element either.
Its the valve itself thats failing anyway , not its seating on the wheel , hence my change of valve type.0 -
In what way is the valve failing?0

prefer presta me, only because I loose less air when wrenching off the pump than with schraeder.
And the aerodynamic gains are particularly impressive0 -
Presta, only as they came on both of my mountain bikes and my roadie, schrader seem to be being phased out from what i have seenbluechair84 wrote:And the aerodynamic gains are particularly impressive
dont forget the weight gains :?0 -
true dat,
however, any gains in aero and weight are thoroughly negated by roadie, which is likely to cause you to fall off on unfamiliar off-road terrain and thus puts the rider at risk.
Stick with schraeder0 -

+ potato shaped valve cap!
Presta all the way for me, I trust them and have never experienced any valve related failures.0 -
I prefer presta just cos i've became used to them. Only issues i have had is with typical punctures. A lot of my friends have schrader valves on their DH bikes0

I really don't care. They let air in, they let air out. Job done. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
Jesus wept this argument has been going on since the days of the Penny Farthing and will still be clogging up the internet when we are riding bikes made out of diamond with helium filled carbon fibre tyres.
In future I am only going to use tubes with Dunlop valves or just to be really different Regina valves they are obviously so much better than these Praeder or Schresta crap.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0 -
Schrader - then you can get dice valve caps etc0
-
Schrader for me. Tougher, Although never had a Presta failure i've had a couple of bent over valve screw bit things but they can be straightened easy enough.
Also cheaper and more chance of finding a pump if yours fails, e.g petrol stations, someones footpump..etc..
Although I do carry a presta spare innertube cus i'm not selfish0 -
IMO Presta seems to work better with a foot/track pump and schrader with a hand pump-presta better for at home, schrader better for trailside repairs.
I have damaged presta valves with a hand pump, but never damaged a schrader.0 -
Well............
I like Presta and I like Schrader.
But which is best?
FIGHT0 -
Is this the MTB version of the helmet debate?
