I am a newbie to biking (having not owned a bike in about 18 years) I have a newish MTB - bought in the sales at the end of 2010, and decided to get out for a ride but found a flat on rear tyre. However the QR is so tight I can't get it off, it is positioned so that it is closed into a small gap in the frame so can only get a finger or two round it to pull.

Any ideas on how to remove the wheel?

It is a Specialized Rockhopper Comp - and it was bought off the internet from Evans but their closest shop is over 100miles away.

Thanks

stick something in there to lever the lever open.

like a knife. a screwdriver or some such item.

just make sure you close it in a suitable position.

    Fairly common problem.

Try looping a cloth around the end of the QR and pulling on the cloth (better grip, and you've given yourself more room).
