Well my last BB (GXP ) lasted less than 6 weeks, so the crankset which is now 2 years old is being binned. This is my 3rd BB in 2 years and i've had enough of the GXP stuff as i can't get a decent range of choices/options.

So i've got 2 on the list currently.

SLX Double/Bash from Germany

Deore triple from Evans (i'll remove the large and use my e-13 bash).

About £30 or so difference ... is the extra £30 for the SLX worth it ?

Reviews rate them both very highly on here.

    Thanks Rowlers.

Jake, i agree the SLX is a little better looking, but to be honest it's not a major factor... i just want something that is going to last me more than 6 weeks lol.

Given the budget, sub 100, which (or what other) would you go for ?

On my Zaskar Team, the SLX, on the Mongoose the Deore

The Deore is stiffer and stronger due to the extra metal.

    LOL OK then :)

    How about

"if you had my Meta5 which would you go for"

    ;)

It'd be the XT. No wait

SLX. I think the better BB, and lighter weight would shade it.
  • i having a m950 put onto bike this friday so il tell you how it feels.

i looked into the SLX but given the cheapest around was £109 compared to the m950 which is £58 i cant see the extra £50 odd quid,

Spoken around to shops and a lot say the m950 will last longer as sonic said due to the metal but the SLX tech is the same as the m950 2011 that is.

Only difference is the weight so it depends, do you want lighter crankset or dont mind?

p.s importing from germany remember to add+20% then custom charges and credit surge charges.,. so another £30+ min

As germany is in EU there are no custom charges and no (extra) vat to pay. Last time I ordered from Bike 24 (another German shop) my bank charged £1.95 fee, but thats all. Delivery was 5 euro and took only 5 days!

I was in the same boat as you and have just ordered the SLX from action sports.de this morning. Together with shipping, and once the euros were converted, it ended up costing me £89.50

Cheapest I could find in the UK was £98 ish from Merlin.

There is no extra cutoms charges to import from within the EU Blabla.

I decided to pay the extra £30 odd for the weight saving and the better BB, not to mention the looks are so much better with the SLX, and I'm guessing the crank arms will be more resistant to scuffing etc.
  • Wied last time i ordered from germany i got slapped with a £10 custom charge, and then a extra £12 VAT charge.

Checked the customs site and it doesnt say 100% tbh that all EU countrys are clear from charges though, though i think which postage service counts for a lot as i allways find UPS a pain.

either way merlin with their VIP club thing useally means they the cheapest/same as EU shops so id go for UK even if it means £5 more. (our economy needs it)

if you're on a budget it's worth tracking down the deore without bottom bracket and buying an XT bottom bracket.
  • I got a new Slx triple crankset from said German company. Took the bike out for a quick ride in the local woods and the pedal threads on the right crank stripped out and 'ovalised.' At worst I would have bunny hopped a puddle, so not to impressed. Contacted the company and they are giving me the run around. So I for one can't recommend them.

Do have an Slx double on the Missus's bike and its been spot on though.

Not saying this is the case with you, but 99% of the time when this happens, the pedals have been installed cross threaded, or not torqued correctly.

That's a good price for the Slx. I wish I had bought it when they were 89 on crc last year but I thought i would wait until the 10 speed came out, I figured the 9 speed would drop in price but they put them up to £127 same as 10 speed. Go figure. :?
  • Definate metal failure here. The pedal thread has shiftted vertically while the crank has been horizontal on a landing. Just on a flat trail, so from bunny hopping a puddle i guess.

The SLX double is reinforced compared to the triple even the pedal threads have steel inserts
i have both triple and double they are both fantastic and have had no faults at all with them
weak and flexi they are not .

Thanks all. Funnily enough last night i did a 3 hour ride, in the latter half of th ride it was quiet as a mouse... strange things BB's.

Obviously that doesn't mean the issue has gone away as it will have flat spotted on a bearing so will be back...

I'm probably going to go for the M590 as weight is secondary to me compared to potential strength.

SLX is a big improvement over the deore. Deore is VERY VERY flexy and weighs a ton.

SLX is light strong and most importantly stiff.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?
  • i going for ride with the m950 tomorrow morning so il let you know how it is.

Our deflection tests at WMB shows the latest Deore to have the same measurements as the SLX, and stiffert than XT. Riders felt no difference with SLX either.

SLX Chainset was delivered today, from Germany.

They feel very light and look real nice!

Weighs 807g on my scales without BB.

Can't wait to get the BB installed at the shop, and I'll let you know how they ride.

    Here's a couple of pics.

Justifying extra money spent on gears is always an arduous task, they all work pretty well so all you are buying is (very minor) weight savings and (mostly) bragging rights.

"Pounds spent per grams saved" figures don't work out favorably for gears, money is much better spent on tyres, wheels and finishing kit.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

I have the SLX double and bash Weeksy, and I'm well happy with it. I've done 6 months or so on it now and it has resisted shoe scuffing and the BB is as smooth as when it was fitted. The bash guard is also strong!
Comapred to the Deore you get an XT BB and the double and bash has steel thread inserts for the pedals for extra strongness.
