Hi all, new poster here looking for advice.

Been meaning to "step up" to clipless pedals for a while, so when ordering new bike on sat thought it was a good opportunity to add some to the build - shaman 520s.

I now need to get shoes that will suit the following:

- 20-25 min walk to drop off son at nursery, followed by
- 14 mile round trip commute to work.

I tried on these in the shop:

But with no cleat in couldn't tell if they would be ok for my walk. There are also similar shimanos for the same price, and the specialized "expert" model on discount.

Do any of these seem fine for my requirements, or should I be looking at something else?

Thanks

  • Welcome.

They look fine. Get whichever fit best. Pretty much any SPD cleat and shoe combination should work, The stiffer the sole, the better it is for cycling, and worse for walking, and vice versa. If it were me, I'd be looking for the best possible shoes for the bike and carry a set of lightweight trainers to change into for the walking bit. More comfortable for walking than cycle shoes, and saves the relatively expensive cycle shoes from wearing prematurely.

Oh, and won't regret switching to clipless, even if you have the odd clipless moment. I fell off 3 times, forgetting to unclip when I first started, but soon becomes second nature.

    Good luck.

I've personally found Specialized shoes to be more comfortable than Shimano. My walk/bike choice are the Spesh Sonoma. ~45-50 from most places, Manchester EBC has em. I wear them all day at work at weekends & can happily have a day of bike walk bike walk in them. The cleats grind slightly on concrete & slabs, but they have in every spd shoe i've owned.

Shimano obviously, not shaman. Damn iPad!

I wont be wearing these at work, so tend towards initial advice to get more of a bikey shoe. Had not considered pair of trainers for walk - loathe to pack even more, but might consider a light pair of converse or something. But if I can walk in the 70 quid mtb shoes then that would be easiest. Not too fussed if need a new pair in a couple of years.

    Thanks both.
  • I use a pair of these... they are pretty good for just walking in as well... have the look and feel of walking shoes when not on the bike.
