Hi
i am wanting to change my 3 ring XT chainset M760 to a double 22/34or36 and bashguard.
what make 34or36 tooth and bashguard fits or is it any 104? will i need to change my chainring bolts? what do you recommend? and will my xtr front mech still do the job?

any 104 will fit. you will most likely need longer bolts (would say 95% likely). your xtr front mech will still do the job, just set the limit screw so that it only shifts to the middle ring.

I've got Middleburn slickshift rings which I'm finding spot on. But tbh I don't think you'll suffer if you get shimano's own rings.

thanks for the input, as it is i rarely use the outer chainring, and seem to be bending it often, cant find any middle shimano 34 or 36 only the std 32. would you say 34 tooth or 36?

I went to a 34/24 combo as i decided that 36 may be a bit of a big jump. If you think that you'll soon get used to it and don't climb really steep gradients too often then 36 might suit. however i'm happy with my combo with my 11-34 rear cassette.

nice one im 11-34 rear also.
never seem to go to big ring up front but often right up on the smaller cogs on the rear when on the middle ring that is now 32 i think 34 would be more a safe bet extra 2 teeth will give me a cog or 2 more on the rear to play with, i presume :)

now what damn bash guard lol and then how do you know what length chainring bolts to get or is it a case of buy the gear mock fit and then measure.

don't want a major beefy bash something light and can take a good flying rock hit?

    Hi
im running a 22-36 up front with an slx derailer and its smooth and faultless
as for the ratios on the rear im running 28-11 with that and its all good for me theres very little a fail on i ride Brechfa Gorlech and Raven mainly .

I'm running 22/36 with a straitline bash guard on my Trance, I found it works better for me than 22/32 & shimano don't do a 34t ring. Try it with steel deore rings, cheap enough if it doesn't work for you.
I am also running a 34t single ring on my hardtail which seems to work well for me.

I had a M770 XT chainset and I replaced it with a Saint 22/36 double and bash. It was an easy swap, just needed to adjust the front derailleur to avoid shifting onto the chainguard. In hindsight, the SLX double and bash would have been a cheaper alternative but the Saint does look nice! The nice part about buying a new double and bash chainset is that you get the bashguard, bolts and new chainrings all in one convenient package. My chainrings were shot anyway so I was able to justify the new chainset (not that I need a reason!).

and an even cheaper option would have just to sort out a bash.

  • 22/36F 11-32R on mine, extra couple of teeth on the big ring meeans much less chance of spinning out on big/small combo, spoke to a few mates about it before as i hardly Ever used big ring and they all suggested going for 36 for the above reasons,

only thing i ever used big ring for was Grinding my way over logs/small trees over the path!  :D

i did try a 26/36 combo for a while as my granny looked Lost inside the 36, but soon realised it Hurt much more!!!
