Tubeless help!

I am attempting to install some Pana Fire XC Pro 2.1 UST tyres on stan's flow rims.

They just have the yellow tape as purchased (as Hope Hoops).

I have inflated them with a tube in to seat one side of the bead, removed, and am now attempting to seat both beads. I am using neat Fairy liquid as advised - which worked initially, but there is a persistent leak from somewhere near the valve. I am using a track pump with the valve core removed to aid air insufflation.

There are a couple of holes near the valve in the floor of the rim - these don't seem to go right through. Would they seal up with some sealant (using Caffelatex)? I don't think the valve itself is leaking.

Any tips/ help welcome.
Thanks

Is the valve in tight enough?
  • As tight as I can get it by hand. Will try and get it tighter with some pliers.....

Panaracers Fire XC will not go tubeless tried and covered the kitchen in sealant. Don't waste your time and sealant have a search for Panaracer tubeless and you'll find I'm not the only one who failed with these tyres which is a shame because they're a good allrounder.
  • Had heard that, but thought that was just the non UST version.

It does seem to be the valve that is leaking, the bead is now seated. Maybe I need a new valve or more tape across the valve hole?

I am assuming that is the non-UST version, as I've been running UST Fire XC Pros on beStanned DT rims for >1000 miles with no problems.

It's not clear from you original post whether you've put any sealant in - if not, you'll need to do that & give the wheel a good shake to distribute it all round the tyre/rim cavity which should sort things out. I woudn't overtighten the valve as you may just end up stripping the valve thread.

  • I hadn't put sealant in - thought that with such a volume of air coming out of the valve, it wouldn't seal, but maybe I'm wrong?
They are the UST version, but still a bugger to get seated. I have now ordered some Stan's rim strips, which will add weight, but should solve the leaky valve problem, hopefully. Will try some different tyres when these wear out.....

  • When you say 'leak' are the tyres holding air at all? If so, I'd still try mounting them with sealant (which, if memory serves is how Stan's recommend you do it) - having committed the schoolboy error of trying to mount UST tyres on UST rims with a Stan's rim strip, it won't necessarily be easier...

  • Really? I was counting on that, although I have just checked their website and they don't recommend it either.
So it's back to square one,
The tyres hold air for a few seconds before it all leaks out of the valve (can feel it on fingers) but seemingly nowhere else. Might have to bite the bullet and just buy some new (non UST) tyres to use with my rim strips that should arrive tomorrow!
  • Just to be clear, have you got the bead to seat on both sides?

    Andy
  • Yes, bead seated all the way round. The valve holds enough air to inflate briefly, but leaks pretty quickly once you stop pumping.
I am wondering if the rim tape that came with the wheels is the right stuff - it was greenish cloth rather than yellow now I think about it.
  • No - sounds like you've got the Hope cloth rim tape on there. IIRC the Stan's stuff is like thick yellow sellotape:No-Tubes-tape-2011-med.jpg.

Alternative might be the Roval tape which is blue but otherwise said to be similar?

    Andy
  • That's time I'll never get back!

thanks for the help, have now got Joe's no flats rim strips in and tyres fully inflated, but will get the yellow tape for the next tyres.
