XTR M970 Front Shifting Problem

I have an XTR M970 top swing front mech with XTR shifters (9 speed) on a double and bash XT crankset. Changing from small to middle (outer) is perfect every time but dropping back to small only happens 50% of the time. Its as though the shifter hasn't completely released the cable to allow the mech to drop down. I have to put a bit of tension back on the shifter before it will re-engage if that makes sense.

Anyone else experienced this/has a solution?

Thanks in advance.

    sounds like mucky cables.

adding tension would make the problem more apparent.

dropping to the small cog is a release of tension.

    Thanks nicklouse.

Changed the cable and it persisted. Turned out a 3 speed shifter doesn't like it when you wind the limit screw in to limit the throw when running a double and bash.
