Which Rims - Hope Hoops?

I am 'hoping' to buy some Hope Hoops for my hardtail mountain bike.

I would consider my riding to be trail / xc, I weigh about 85kg so on the limit, they will be used for about 30-40 miles per week through summer. I would say that I am not an agressive rider and tend to be light on a bike, avoid drop offs of more than 50cms and no jumps.

Firstly should I look at Pro 2 Evos or Pro 3, is there a massive weight/durability difference? Secondly given being on the weight limit should I be looking at the mavic, dt swiss or stans options?

Cost is also a factor I have seen the pro 3 with stans combo at £300 this is my max budget, whereas I have seen pro 2 (non evo) with X717's for £231 are these to be avoided?

Fun / Social rides only, no racing. Thank you in advance for your guidance.

PS - Please no comments about search functions or google please, I have looked but am struggling to get to grips with it all! :?

  • The reason non evo ones are cheaper is because they are "last years" model and have been replaced with Pro 2 evos

nothing wrong with non evo hubs
I assume this is French petrol - be careful in reverse - the car will retreat rapidly at the least provocation.

Lapierre, thanks for your reply - no major design changes between pro 2 and evo or known faults on the non evo then?

This sounds good so far I am quite happy at the prospect of making such a saving.

I think the new hope hoops are all evo now which is basically just a stronger rear hub for maxle etc as Stifs explained it to me. I'd go for flows at your weight they're that much heavier but are stronger and if you want to go tubeless it's simple conversion.

I too would go for the notubes rims. Depending on how effeicently you destroy components either Crest on Flow. The crest, despite being labled as an XC wheel is still a good all mountain wheel and ridiculously strong for the weight. Both rims allow very easy tubeless set up and it works well with both UST and non-UST tyres.

Yep, I'd go Crest unless you trash wheels, when I'd go Flows. Don't bother with Pro 3s, or straight pull Pro2s, just get normal Pro 2s!

Thanks for your advice guys, I am a relative newcomer and still quite slow but do think that I ride quite light so am thinking along the lines of the crests at the moment.

I am running hope brakes so could go down 3 bolt rotor and wheel combo route, although I understand as above that the pro 2's may be better for my weight, also help save me a few quid to boot.

    Thank you all.

Now just the dilemma on whether to run tubes or tubeless?

    Oh dear...... :)

I wouldn't bother with the SP-XC3s, IMO few advantages and some fairly significant disadvantages.

    Tubeless all the way.

njee20 - thanks, as a matter of interest why would you recommend avoiding the straight pulls, I only ask as they seem easier to come by when coupled with the crests.

I think I will take your advice on going for the pro 2's.

They're more expensive for little weight saving. Truing them is harder, spares are virtually impossible to come by, particularly if you're abroad.

That's great thanks, i'll go with some pro 2's on crests.

Thinking of going with freeborn has anyone had experience of them or suggest any other competitive stores?
  • UK bike store have them in stock and they might be cheaper
