10 speed for 9 speed

Hi all,
This maybe a very simple question to answer, but my knowledge is lacking on the tech side. I need to replace my XT rear shifter and was thinking of getting the 10 speed one to replace the 9 speed one im currently running. The idea being, next time i need a new rear mech, I will get the 10 speed one and then also the 10 speed cassett (rather than shelling out for all of it now, when i dont need it). Will the 10 speed shifter work with the current 9 speed set up im currently running?!
Cheers in advance.

As far as I'm aware, it's an 'all-or-nothing' kind of deal. The 10-spd shifters and mechs. pull a different amount of cable to 9-spd, so none of it is cross-compatible.0

See the topic in the FAQs.

What puts me off most about 10 speed is none of it is 9 speed compatible, and most stuff is 9 speed. Plus it costs more and I don't have a real need for it. It's also good to be able to share 9 speed powerlinks amongst friends.0
