my lbs tried it on my old, old deore cranks but the thread ended up being a tiny bit too big for the pedal so had to get new cranks.

you could try the way the lbs tried with a heli coil but it doesn't always work.

you can buy a left crank arm http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=41814 but it comes in as 170mm

check the classifieds.. seen a few XT cranks and hone cranks going cheap recently.

any good LBS will have a thread saver kit.

so yes it can be done.
