Just been to the docs about what I thought was a pulled muscle or groin strain. He tells me I've got a ****ing hernia and have to have an op in a couple of weeks and stay off anything active for a good 4 weeks after that  Just when the best biking weather for ages and plenty of days off are starting....bo11ox, talk about bad luck.
Looks like I'll have to spend more time on here instead....

dude that is sh!t, sorry to hear that!
have you done any research in to recovery and if you can help it along in anyway, as in physio?0 -
I'll be doing a bit of that over the weekend mate, as I've now got some spare time to do it in. From what the doc said it seems to be mostly a case of taking things easy and letting it heal, though he did say it was better to walk about/move from day 1, just nothing heavy or strenuous.
Apparently it's going to hurt a bit after the op, the only bonus is I'll probably not be able to go to work for a week or two"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

I had one a few years back on my groin, I carried on biking up to the op and was back on my bike two weeks after. Just take it a bit easier and you`ll be fine (assuming it`s a small lump which pushes out when you cough and not a big one which is hanging out/ very painful).
I`d avoid big jumps and drop-offs though!0 -

It's only a little lump thank feck ! But I can't cycle because it bl00dy well hurts. First noticed it cycling to work last week, got just over half way in I felt something like a strained muscle which just got worse and I was gritting me teeth a bit by time I got to work."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." Yeah mine wasn`t painful and I knew for a fact that it had been cause by weight lifting, I stopped the weights and stopped playing footy but carried on biking.
Maybe you`ve been doing a bit to much on it, I only get out about once a week on average (wife and children and stuff). Let it settle for a week and see how you go.

Hope for a speedy recovery man! Sucks to hear another biker down, even if only for something relatively minor.0

I had mine done in December last year. Finally went back to work on January the 30th! Mine was quite a big one tho.
1st week, expect it to be quite sore and even a cough stings like a bugger. Just keep moving but absolutely no lifting.
2nd week less pain, but still no lifting, if you have stiches in these will be taken out.
3rd week swelling should be going down quite a bit now, you can try lifting a small bag of shopping (not a crate of beers)
4th week same as 3rd.
I started to do small rides on the bike about the 6th week, couldn't go back to work as i work at a Nursing Home, and couldn't manovure the hoist.
Good luck, you'll be glad when its done.0 -
Hopefully mine's a minor one, don't fancy waiting 6 weeks after the op as summer will be gone by then
I don't have to lift anything much more than a biro in my job so definitely won't get that amount of time off work, and will probably have to work from home not long after.
Just gutted to be off the bike when its so nice. I also had a demo day in Surrey Hills lined up next month to have a go on a Nomad Carbon, Yeti 575 and Orange 5 that I'll have to cancel now..."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." I still rode as much as i could before the op. Just was a bit sore afterwards. You having it done private or through the NHS?
Is it a Inguinal one in your groin?0 -
Bad luck man - had one a few years ago myself.
The 6 week thing is a worst case figure based on the average fatty's recovery time, you should be better in 4 weeks or less if you're reasonably fit. My sister's a physio and told me to buy a pull buoy float and get in the swimming pool loads.
Swimming just upper body develops your core which will massively benefit your riding, and the greater emphasis on breathing well will make a huge difference to your overall cardio fitness. So no need to go to waste!0 -
but your T-1000, how can you get injured if you survived when bullets were shot at you...0

Not good, not good at all, get well soon
whilst you recover you can always go for the string and lime approach0 -

@ andyrm - yep, was told to swim as part of the recovery. I'm pretty crap at it but sounds like it might be my only option for a bit of exercise, I'm already going a bit cold turkey without my exercise fix.
@Jay - I bl00dy wish!
@ Gazlar - a few weeks at home means plenty lime and string time

Actually stevo666 he's done the world a favour, you naughty terminator you. You thought no one would notice that 21/4/11 was skynet attack day.
Did your doctor by anychance wear a dickie bow and have a scottish redheaded bint for a nurse.
Whoever you are doctor the world thanks you.The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Dude, that sucks balls. Same thing happened to me last year when I had my appendix out, just as the prime riding season was starting. Bad times.
Only thing I can suggest is lots of computer games followed by pimping your bike out followed by an MTB orgy when you are better. Some of my best riding was the first week I was back on the bike.
Look forward to this!
