Mrs A wants a bike for trolling around on in Sth Devon. Bit of road, bit of paths etc. She had a test ride on this Specialized Vita Expert and likes it. Seems OK, compact chainset and carbon forks etc. Anyone got one or can recommend anything better/cheaper along the same lines? Thanks.

Looking at the two I really can't see any need to pay the extra for the expert model, your talking proper road bike money there. In fact I'd think the gearing would be better with a triple instead of the compact but then that does depend on your missus fitness I guess.
Anyway, the vita sport my wife has is perfect for someone who is new to road biking and wants something quite quick. It's much faster than the MTB's most people buy to use on the road and in fact most hybrids too, it's also very very light!
Stating the obvious here but what it is not is a full on road bike. It's ideal for quick rides around the local roads, trips into town and yes on gravelly paths, fitness rides and having a bit of fun. It's a very relaxed frame so she won't be keeping up with the roadies.
IMO no way would I spend that kind of money on what is basically a hybrid. The 2011 vita sport looks to be downgraded with alloy forks Elite has carbon forks at £5490 -
Considering your very significant contributions to our threads I'm sure that you will be posting a photo of the new proud owner and bike.
Sorry, can't help with sourcing the bike but hope you get one at a good price.0
