headset issue

Hi there I'm currently building an old bike back up for a mate,
Frame's got a zero-stack headset fitted - all the parts are present except for the wedge ring thingy (don't know what it's called) that goes on the steerer - and fits between steerer and barings to make it tight - before dust cap is fitted.
Are these universal? forks are 1"1/8 - or specific to headset? (don't knoe what headset it is (unbranded) - came as standard with 2009 Boardman comp.
Can I get one from somewhere? or am I better off buying new headset/new bearings

no they are not. they are headset specific. But you can find the same crown race used in more than one headset from a maker.
get a new headset fitted."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I don't mean the crown race - I mean the race that goes on after the top bearing
I suppose it's the same answer though
Don't really want to shell out £30 on a new headset (eating into my profit margin!) - the last one I fitted (FSA zero) this top race thingy was plastic - can't be that important - could I just make sure the stem is really tightKinesis xc 130:

the locating wedge/compression ring.
pop into your LBS with the frame and fork and they may have one of these.
and take some cookies."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Nick, don't suppose you have a FSA split crown race for a Orbit XL2 in that lot? And the top part of the headset that fits on the comp ring?0

as it happens.
no.
but i do have some where else.
BUT which Orbit 2 is it as the early ones had a different lower cup/bearing."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
