Afternoon All (and a lovely one at that!)

Im after some advice on bike racks :) I have a Punto Evo 3 door and have been looking around to make use of this lovely weather and seem to be coming across the Saris Bones is this the rack of choice?
My requirements are simply 2 bikes and a quality product :D

My mate has one and totally loves it, in fact I'm currently borrowing his one to try it out myself. ALso all reviews I've read in the press or from actual owners are all positive.

The Saris Bones is a very good rack as it can fit many different shapes of cars. Remember that if the bike obscures your lights, you'll have to use a lighting board.

Cheers all! I think its made up. I`ll have to check on the lights when its installed :(
  • i used one for ages, but i never bothered with a light board, never got into any issues, cops don't really mind :)

Ooops, big mistake. They queue up outside the ferryports and nick all the people who have racks obscuring lights down here.

If you position the Saris bones right (well, "right" being a relative term, set it up NOT like they tell you to!), then you won't need a lightboard, as the bikes will be high up enough anwyay.

Like my car (59 plate ford focus) having high up light clusters means most bike racks will end up obscuring your lights. might be able to get the bones to sit quite low, below the lights but this would probably mean strapping a number plate on if youre bothered much by sticking to the rules.

Let us know how you get on with whatever you choose as I'll be in the market for one soon. Good luck!

I see Halfrauds have one of there never ending sales on and does include bike racks so I`m going to take a look, My light cluster is also high which would mean i could opt for a low rack but then covers my reg plate as you say :(

Easier and cheaper to just strap on a reg plate than it is to put a light board (with all the associated electric work) on.

Very true... Although when pricing it up it isnt cheap im looking into roof bars and a bike holder coming in at around £100ish quid still cheaper than the bones and alot stronger and no legal complications :S

Fiat have there roof bars for £70 and Amazon have a Mont Blanc roof rack for £32 all in £102 :)

    Is it single though :(

That seems very cheap (although realistically, it seems to be just about what they're worth)

If you do go for the Saris Bones, make sure it suits your bike. Hardtails are fine but not all full suss bikes go on. The arms on the rack wouldn`t fit mine as the rear shock makes the gap too small

Which is where the bike beam, or a "false crossbar" comes in. You can pick similar ones up from Halfords, I'm told.
They go on your bike, by clamping on the stem, and seat post, and therefore create a jnew "top tube" to go on the rack.
    Works a treat.

I use one of these for my mtb (not needed for the road bike) but i have, and would reccomend the proper Saris bike beam.

I looked at the one in Halfords and it just didn't seem as well made, and thats one thing you want to work properly

Anyone know if a Stumpy FSR goes onto the Bones 2/3 without the need of the crossbar ?

Might pick one up from the lbs this afternoon but don't have my bike at the moment to test :)

Its not about the cops minding, its about other people being able to see if you're indicating or braking, without having to use your rear bumper as an indicator that you are slowing down.

    Idiot.
