Why buy bicycle maps if you can get 'similar' maps for free?
Reality behind this provocative title is of course a bit more complex. Recently I discovered 3 free and really detailed maps for parts of Flanders. Not as good as the famous 'fietsnetwerkkaarten' (*) but still very practical.
An overview (and unfortunately they overlap considerably).

Toeristische kaart Waasland 2011 1:85000 **

Toeristische kaart Vlaamse Ardennen 2011 1:80000 **

Especially if you combine them with the information that you can obtain from http://www.fietsnet.be/routeplanner/default.aspx, they will become very useful.
You can obtain them for free (+ 1 euro postage costs for 1 item or 2,50 euro all three)
http://www.tov.be/publicaties.aspx?taxid=1118-1114&id=5053&price=0-0
at pages 3, 4 and 5.
Click the item, click 'Lees meer' and click 'Bestellen' ...
Or pick them up at a local tourist board (where there's a chance that you will only find the local map) or at Toerisme Oost-Vlaanderen - Sint-Niklaasstraat 2, B-9000 Gent that has all of them.[/b]
(*) This is how the 'Fietsnetwerkkaarten' look like. They cost 6 euro each and you need several of them for only 1 flemish province.
