I'm looking at getting my first road bike. I don't fancy forking out for a brand new one and have looked at used. I've had good experiences with Giant Mountain bikes and was looking at the Giant Defy range.

I'm 5"11 and have seen a good defy but it's a Large size. Do you think it would be a good size match?

I reckon it might be a bit big for you. Im 6'2" and ride a large and I think it fits me pretty well however if i was 2 or 3 inches smaller i think it would be too much of a stretch.

I think a size M/L would be pretty much bang on for you.

By the way, great bikes and good value for money. I have a 2009 2.5

as above i think, im 6ft 1 and ride a large and its pretty perfect for me. the m/l should be a better fit.
  • Great, thanks guys. As luck would have it, I missed the end of the auction. But, what's weird is that I emailed the guy to ask his height, he told me 5"9. No wonder the saddle was right down and the bike was for sale.

    Good job you missed it.

I am 5'11 and I ride a large but with a 9cm stem instead of 12cm which works but isn't perfect.

I am 6.2 foot and my Large Defy is fine, thing is you can get a new stem in time if you feel its worth it, but its worth popping into your local shop for an idea - they may have a bargain!

Here is an article that helped me when I bought my bike online:

    Hope you get sorted!

L would probably be too big IMHO
    I'm about 5'9/10'' and have an M
I'd guess M/L might be a better size for you

    I'm 6ft and have an M/L.

If you can, ride the bike in question and see how it feels. Check the stem length, can you swap it for shorter if need be?

The Ape Index talked about in the wiggle link is a useful thing to consider IMO. I'm 5'11" but when I bought my Defy last year I opted for a M frame as my AI was negative. M/L just felt a tad stretched out

I got an M/L and I'm 5'9''. I reckon it's just a shade large for me, but I'm used to it now and I've got it pretty well set up (only took a year). I reckon if I shorten the stem by 20mm it'll be perfect. Next time I think it'll be a M.
