They come in different shapes so you have to try them on, it might be the correct size but the wrong fit.

No need to be obnoxious, it's sound advice. I tried the giro Xen and Xar, aswell as the fox flux which pick up endless top scores and reviews from users but neither felt "right".

I tried a Giro Hex and immediately felt at home in it, fits like a really well fitting glove and regardless of the reviews, I wouldnt swap my Hex for one of the others.

As Nicklous said, pick the one that fits, it'll be more comfortable, and in the event of a crash it'll work better.

If you don't want real helpful advice just go for the one that looks nicest

Sound advice .... I've a big head which seems to be an odd shape (!) and over the years have struggled to find motorbike and cycle helmets to fit with a degree of comfort.

Go round your bike shops until you find a lid that suits you best.

that is the best one out there.

Back to the MC comment above. I am a Shoei head not an Arai head.Likewise TLD lids just dont fit.

An uncomfortable or poorly fitting lid is pointless.

    DAMMMMMN YOUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anyway, back to OP:

As said above though, people can only tell you which helmets are lightweight or well vented etc. However, none of this matters if it's the wrong shape for your head.

Best advice would be to get down the LBS and try some different ones on.

    .

I found the exact opposite to this this weekend, I preferred the Fox Flux. Going to a shop and trying them on is the best way
  • ive got the flux lid, have come from a giro hex, have to say the fox is a Very sweaty lid! (prolly why they supply you with a spare set of pads!!)
the hex was a great lid, felt good, looks good and well vented, the fox is very close but as said, sweaty!! also the sizings odd, they do a xs/s, s/m, l/xl, no m/l! so have to go up a size as the s/m just didnt sit properly,

deffo get a few different ones on your head though, even same brand but different lid's fit differently, you'll find afew that make you look a total mushroom too!!

Fit is of prime importance, but the protection they offer varies a lot. This is where recommendations can apply, then you go try them for fit.

i.e. There are simple helmets designed for commuters, XC helmets, and helmets that offer more protection that are a cross between XC and skate (usually more protection at the back). Not counting full face which obviously offers the most.

But for fit, don't just rely on the typical store staff test of fit where they just check if the thing falls off when holding your head upside down.

Ensure it's done up correctly first, so that's beyond just adjusting the strap. Make sure the inner stuff is adjusted correctly, and note that to get a really good fit you may need to make adjustments in the inner part beyond just adjusting the slider thingy at the back. Giro's guide involves quite a few steps and possibly putting padded inserts in also.

Then when it's correctly fitted, try to remove the helmet with a fair bit of effort (this is what Giro say to do), i.e. by holding the helmet with both hands and try to roll it off front and back.

If you can get the helmet off after fitting it properly, it's no good.
