The OS has got its act together as far as online mapping of the UK.

You need to install MS silverlight for this site to work, but can zoom to the "Explorer" 1:25000 OS maps of the UK using guest access (click on the "leisure" tab to do so, otherwise you can get more detail in the "zoom map" tab, down to house boundries).
It tells you the grid reference of the central point, and apparently you can store routes etc (which I haven't tried).

I believe they've also open-sourced a fair few of their maps. I've used Quo.2 a bit and paid (very little) to get local OS maps but their OpenStreetMaps (or are they OpenCycleMaps?) are free0
