No surprises there then, explains a lot.
who said i was a telemarketer ?
i dont make the calls mate
my company does a few other things as well as run call centres
appreciate im on a losing side
if you read my post i didnt say that it wasnt crap to receive calls you dont want
im merely trying to present a balanced argument
I suspect it's a well worn argument from your point of view. Call centres have their place for sure but I'd argue only in an inbound role (going back to my previous point). You ask if phonecalls are any worse than banner adverts or pop ups. I'd would say they're worse than banner ads and as annoying as pop ups. Banner adverts are similar to TV, radio and billboard ads in that they are passive. With phone calls you have to physically take an action just to discover it's something you have no interest in. I have a pop up blocker which nails the pop up issue but I would suffer from various overseas ones still calling (and a few distinctly Scottish accents too).
I'd also hazard a guess that a lot of animosity towards call centres is down to the fact that a lot have sprung up in areas that have been ravaged by the decline of manufacturing industry. People don't look at the fact that you're putting jobs into areas that have high unemployment (not through altruism obviously...in job with a high staff turnover requires an area with a large available labour pool). They just see young people on the ends of phones who'd probably have been in a factory learning a trade and who wouldn't be demoralised by that (and a call centre giving you an opportunity to gain a piece of paper saying you know how to turn on a computer doesn't class as a real qualification).
Just to give my own bias
I have a lot more call centre experience than I ever wanted (all inbound)Formally known as Coatbridgeguy0 -
My experience of telemarketing:
I worked for a while doing cold calling telesales fo an outfit that did "textured masonry coatings" whetever the hell they are, we would literally have a few sales guys in an area and run through the phone book to try and get appointments for them.
I was only there for 2 months during a difficult time in my life when i needed some fast money. They changed their name in that time and were featured on watchdog.
Twice i turned up and there were cops there, alot of the supervisors had lunch with pablo if you know what i mean and there was once a full on fist fight in the call centre
The most embarasing thing was i was pretty good at it; used to walk out with £500-750 cash at the end of the week and got made a trainer... it was pretty harcore, i got my girlfriend of the time a job there and she lasted half a day.0 -

I don't think you can learn to be good at outbound. Either you have it or you don'tFormally known as Coatbridgeguy0
