Can't seem to find much information about Fulcrum wheels on the net.

Looking at the Fulcrum Red Metal 10 Disc wheelset, as they are only £120:

The other option is 2010 Mavic Crossride at £140:

The Fulcrum have 24 spokes where the Mavic has 28, so I am assuming the Mavic will be stronger, weights seem about the same - just under 2Kg per wheelset.

Anyone got the Fulcrum Red Metal 10, any good?

My other option is from Merlin, Mavic XM317, Deore Hub, ACI SS DB Spokes, but I am assuming these will be over the 2Kg mark.

Thanks

Recently fitted some Red Metal 5's and they feel really good and look well made. Very stiff, even with the funny spoke arrangement.
Can't help on the 10's though.

Fulcrum's 5 and 10 spoke arrangement is really cute bit of design and plenty strong enough, the 5s that on-one were doing for £89 was an absolute steal. The 10s are the entry level product IIRC, slightly heavier with slightly different hubs and seals than 5s, it's all on their site (or was). 5s are nice and stiff with bearings that run and run, cracking set for the money (unbeatable actually).

Currently out of stock atm at on-one but phone them up and check if they're definitely going to have stock back in some time soon and then get yourself on the email alert - they're still a steal even if they come back in at £100.

Failing that, I can't see a problem with the 10 set unless you are a fatty.

I've only just started looking at wheels, I saw those bargain Red Metal 5's at On One but all gone. I did put myself on the stock alert email, I might wait and see what happens.

I have just spotted some Red Metal 10's for £110, which isn't bad but obviously not as good a deal as the one above.

I am 13 stone so not a complete fatty, but no lightweight either!

I thought all mountain bikers weigh about 10 stones... or is that just the lycra brigade? :)

I bagged myself a set of the Red Metal 5s from on one before Christmas. A great wheelset, the only bad thing is the incredibly annoying noise the rear hub makes when free wheeling, I find myself pedalling where I'd usually coast just so I don't hear it!

The upside of that is everyone hears you in plenty of time, walkers in particular which saves shouting at them.

I thought that was a good point :)

Also got the fives, find the rear wheel hub is a little tighter than the fron, other than that top set of wheels for the money. I got Evan to price match on-one, might be worth a go.

I'd also look at superstarcomponents.com Had a set of their £100 wheels with the vapor rims and switch hubs and have been fantastic but are heavy.

I had a look at superstar components... like you say their £100 wheels are heavy.

Their £150 custom wheels - black rims are out of stock, other colours are extra.

I prefer black wheels to be honest.

mine were for the first month till the factory grease wore off, i dare say you could regrease to get silence but it's not needed.
  • I run Fulcrum RM 5 model 2010 (gray/white graphics) for one year.
They just keep spinning and the sound of rear hub is great!
I bought'em for 150€ which is a resonable price for the set.
They look really well made and for me they are great value for money.

Very easy to re-grease. Undo the allen bolt on the brake side of the hub, unscrew to collor it sits in and you can then pull the freehub/alex out. I was having a look and did it by accident.
  • Sorry for raising the dead, but I just received a set of lightly used Red Metal 10. The catch is, the rear wheel is missing the axle and the bearings.. I've only worked on the old school loose ball setup (or whatever it's called) before, so I would be grateful if anyone could help be figured out what parts I need to get it up and running. I have no instructions, nor was I able able to find the Metal 10 on Fulcrum's webpage.

    Thanks

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the replacement parts are not cheap. You would be better off starting with a new wheel. I belive the freehub alone was over 50 quid. However if you not in a hurry I'll be sell my metal 5s in the new year if you want them lol

Thanks a lot for the swift responses!

I do have the freehub, but thanks to the manual I've been able to search for spares, and a set of the BB alone would cost €20+shipping from Italy... Indeed, it's not feasible to get it up and running (I'm not even sure the rear wheel is strong enough for me). Guess I should sell the freehub and the rim for a few pennies

    Thanks again.
