When I started out, I bought the computer before I bought the shoes, and loved it.
It's nice when you start to see the distance you cover, the speeds you can you (and as such, how fast the pros are!) etc.
Shoes improve the ride and your efficiencey no end thouh.
Ultimately you'll get both so.0 -
If it were me I'd go for the shoes first, will be most beneficial to your riding IMO.0

Shoes & pedals first0

Get a cheapy wired computer (couple of quid from ebay) as a tempoary measure & then get some shoes/pedals for keeps.
Best of both worlds - pedals/shoes will make a massive difference to your cycling, but measuring your progress will help quantify your cycling & get you properly hooked on "beating that time"!

A basic wired computer for a tenner or less from Tesco or ebay or wherever will do as well as the cateye thing. Maybe better - wireless isn't always very reliable.0

Do you have a smart phone? Something with GPS built in?
If so - there are apps that will record your rides (time, distance, etc). Not for while you are riding, but certainly good to look at afterwards.
Buy shoes and pedals - otherwise how will you ride the bike!? 8)0 -
Another +1 for shoes/pedals first...
It REALLY changes how you ride and when you finally get a computer, you can marvel in the MPH that your shoes give you0 -
