953 by Brian Rourke or Chas Roberts, or the Columbus XCR by Enigma and Cinelli make great looking frames I must admit. Will 953 or XCR stiff enough for a 90kg rider though?
then again a peg big leg emma uses even more overbuilt tubes with internal strengthening and is stiffer again than the marcelo
what is 'stiff enough' is going to be a fairly subjective call, which i think is where an extended test ride comes in. i am guessing enigma, rourke and roberts builds will reflect the same hierarchy.
edit: even a peg marcelo has massively oversized stays (for a steel bike). the XCR peg stays are only slightly thinner by all accounts.

I don't know the answer - Passoni look nice though - but can I post this because it so fabulously, hideously ugly

Great. You've put me off my tea0

actually i just re-read your earlier posts, and for crit racing maybe as already suggested a basic stiff aluminium frame that is not too precious would do the job. i would be scared sh****ss to use a top end frame for racing crits if it was my own money
something like a caad9 or 10 would be just a fast and a fraction of the replacement cost.
just my 2 cents worth.0 -
I'd love to try a 953 Rourke.
It seems to me that Ti has fallen foul of the mass market in some cases and you can pick up a fairly average Ti frame despite everyone and their dog touting all Ti frames as some 'wonder bike'.
It's not necessarily a bad thing - a fairly average Ti frame is fine but I really wince at the price of these things. Simply over-rated in many cases (but not all).
PS that Sabbath is feckin hideous!0 -
Crikey... choices, choices, choices. So many lovely bikes to choose from... I'm prepared to replace a crashed frame up to about 2.5k. I've only crashed a bike once in 20 years so it's not something I really take into consideration. I just like the fact that Ti is more resistant to the day-to-day wear and tear any bike receives in UK conditions.
Will have to try and ride as many of the above as I can before I lay my cash down.
I'll give that ugly looking bedstead framed Sabbath thingy a miss though as It's the ugliest bike I've ever seen. What was Greg Roche thinking?!!! :shock:let all your saddles be comfy and all your rides less bumpy....0 -
well ok then the priority on day to day wear and tear avoidance probably means back to titanium or stainless steel.
with no paint or lacquer needed on either material, either will look as good in 5 years time as the day you first rode it 8)0 -

Yeah, you're right, more pictures. Not keen on that IF though. Baum does it for me. I'm even willing to forgive the use of Shimano on this occasion.

love the colours of the Baum Gulf - considered getting Enigma to do the Extensor up in a similar pattern but chickened out.
Just thought that as I intend to use this bike forever and some, i went for non flashy metallic red.0 -

I don't have any experience of their craft, so I can't vouch for them.
I wouldn't mind trying a raw 953 (stainless steel) with the old skool lugs. To be honest though I'm very happy with my current steel steed, it's more than good enough for my talents.0 -
If I was buying a money no object bike I would love to try this :
