Fork compression plug problem?

Has anybody used one of these?

It came with my new forks already installed in an uncut steerer! I unscrewed it and a bolt fell off inside the fork steerer leaving a ring wedged in the steerer. I have to saw this part of the steerer off anyway but should i persist with this device even if I manage to retrieve the ring? Is there a way to remove the ring? The bolt is now stuck below the ring.

    tap the lower expanding wedge into the fork (threaded bit). hook out the sleeve pour out the bits.

    The top bit has a lip that prevents it going into the fork.

    fitted to my Milani,CLX and BMC great piece of kit, far better than a star washer/nut system especially with a carbon steerer.
