Shimano Tiagra Gear Shifting Not Smooth

Hi
I have a ladies BeOne Road Bike which is fitted with a Shimano Tiagra Rear Derailleur, The bike is new and I've only done a few hundred miles on it but I'm having problems with gear changes.
I can't change into a lower gear smoothly, I often have to push the gear lever twice just to get in to go down one gear, it also seems to catch and I can't push the pedals round smoothly.
This is even worse when I try and change down to the smaller cog on the front derailleur which is a Shimano sora, the gear shifters are also Shimano Sora.
Changing up to a higher gear always seems fine.
Could anyone tell me how to resolve this issue ? I have a race on Sunday and would rather learn how to sort out the problem myself !
Thanks
Claire

Hi, you should get a free first service from your bike shop.0

These are distributed by Chain Reaction Cycles I believe? So no free service.
It sounds as though you've lost a bit of tension in your cable. To add tension, turn the barrel adjuster on the derailleur that the housing feeds into anticlockwise, 1/2 turn at a time.- - - - - - - - - -
