what maximum teeth on rear cog does a short cage RD support? is it 28 teeth?

    For Shimano it's 28 and Campagnolo you can often use a 29. However it doesn't always work with some frames because of the geometry of the rear mech hanger.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • And, conversely, you can get away with bigger on some frames. I've got a short cage mech that will happily shift onto an 32 sprocket on my hack bike.

    The most sensible way to do it is to buy the cassette you're interested in and, if it doesn't work with your short cage mech, buy the require long cage mech.
