Hello folks

Two thirds of the way into my commute home / trg ride this evening, I suffered quite a nasty crash.

I had biked about 23 mile and all was good. I got up out of the saddle to get up some momentum on a slight incline and bang. The next thing I know I'm on the floor, bad road rash on my legs, a nasty bump on my head (the helmet took the brunt) and other minor grazes and feeling very shook up but luckily not too badly injured.

I am not sure about my bike itself - I need to get LBS to give that a look over tomorrow and hopefully it will be ok. But I did get the following kicking on equipment:
1* Garmin 310XT screen completely smashed (unit still working) - cost around £230
1* pair of Profile Stryke carbon clip on bars - both broken on impact - Cost around £120
1* Helmet - a cheapo one so not too fussed and it did its job but obviously will now be destined for the bin following the impact.

I am going to chance my arm with Garmin tomorrow and tell them the truth and appeal to their good nature to exchange and pay for a refurb.
I will get in touch with Profile as I know they do some form of deal on goods following a crash, but I am not holding out any hopes on this.

At first I did not know why in the middle of a clear road in good conditions I had come off. It was only when I got up and moved all of my kit to the side of the road that I realised what the problem was. The pedal had completely sheared off at the crhomoly axel -the actual pedal was still on my cleat and the pin had completely sheared in the crank.

The pedals were Keo Look Carbons. I have had a quick look on google and Bikeradar and it appears that they were recalled (upto manufacture date of 2005) in 2008 due to "potential failure". Obviously I was completely unaware of this otherwise I would have got them swapped over for the upgraded axel.

So I have three points -
1) If you have any keo pedals please check the date on the bottom to make sure it is not pre 2006 - if so seek advice about getting them replaced. A quick google will show you that I am not the only one who has found themselves kissing tarmac due to a failure
2) Am I likely to have any comeback with Keo? I am not fussed about the pedals but I am peed about my garmin and tri bars
3) Anybody know any contact deails for Keo Look UK?

Sorry to be longwinded but I am sore and pi$$ed off so thanks for your help in advance

    Hi mate,

Can't help you with the Look pedals as I'm a Time man myself but sorry to hear about the crash.
Sometimes it's the shock of it happening that's the worst bit!

Hopefully Look will be able to help you out if the pedals have been recalled before.

There's a link to move to the UK site but it appears to be down at the moment.

    Good luck

I've only seen a pedal break once before and it happened when the guy smashed the pedal off a kerb. Any chance that could have happened to you either at that moment or at some point in the past?
    More problems but still living....
  • Id imagine that if they are the batch that should have been recalled, there is an admission of faulty workmanship implied, so you have a good chance at a claim...

The only problem will be WHO should be to blame.. The manufacturer that made the faulty pedal and recalled them as such, or the vendor who sold the item after a recall was issued.

Id hope that the manufacturer would do the decent thing and go down the "good will" route though so they would be the first point of contact, making sure you have LOTS of photographic proof.

One of the many reasons I still ride with the original Look pedals and delta cleats .....

How long have you owned these pedals and were these new? The answer may help you decide where you seek re-dress for the damage caused by the failure of this pedal.

It's definitely worth contacting Look, even if they're not willing to accept any liability relating to the crash (not unreasonable really, they did recall the pedal. Just unfortunate that yours slipped through the net) you may well get a new set of pedals off them.
