What do you wear on the beach?

Well this summer I'm going abroad for the first time in many years (young family no money and all that). So what is acceptable beach wear, Board shorts, swim shorts? I'm asking because I'd like to take the the opportunity to even up the old cycling tan on the legs. Certainly won't be wearing a thong, but are trunks or briefs acceptable? The 'Budgie Smugglers' advert makes me wonder if some attire is a no no. Sad, but need some advice from the men of the world, or even from the girlies

Slim fitted (but not tight) shorts that look tailored. Plain, one colour (could be bright) or maybe white or black as a second colour. No logos. This sort of thing:

There you are. And you thought you'd never get a straight answer.

To avoid the tanned lower legs and lower arms versus white thighs and upper arms that lycra clad roadies get from days out on the bike you can balance it all up through these simple steps...

    1. Go to Nudist Beach
    2. Wear only winter leg warmers and arm warmers and a full face balaclava
    3. Lay in baking sunshine for at least the same time daily as you would ride but do this every day of the holiday
    4. Remember to turn over every half hour to get an even colour all round.

Bingo - if you haven't been arrested you should have a perfectly balanced all over tan :D

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd wash my eyes out with soap if I didn't think it would sting so much.

What has been seen cannot be unseen! More's the pity
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Left or right, either will give you problems that will have you unpicking it all day.

I'd have thought trunks would be OK on a beach - especially if you are going in the water - including speedos.

I just wear a pair of shorts though as they are a bit more versatile if you want to stray from the sand into town or something.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

Further to my previous suggestion, how about a pair of unlined white shorts for swimming?

My last few holidays have either been in America or in places where most people were American. With them it seems that anything other than board shorts is a big no-no. I remember hearing one college girl saying "that may be acceptable in Europe, but not here" as a guy walked past in trunks. It seems to me that the same mindset is gradually infiltrating the UK.

My technique is to wear shorts, but if I'm sunbathing I just hitch them up a bit to expose my thighs. Best of both worlds!!!

I love this thread - mixutre of captain sensible's vs take the total pee.

A pair of shorts which you can swim in, yet which also look ok'ish to wonder around the shops in! And if they are roomy enough, you could roll them up your legs when sunbathing.

And to complete the whole warddrobe, one T-shirt and one pair of flp flops. Maybe a toothbrush. Definitely no pants on holidays. That's all I'd be able to fit in the suitcase after my missus has packed enough for the apocalypse.

Just say a cycling guy you communicate with at a distance wears the getup to the beach.

board shorts normally but if i'm doing any proper swimming in the sea/ocean then they are crap for that so wear a pair of speedo jammers instead (which look sort of like cycling shorts without the pads)

Stopped wearing the brief style speedos a few years back as the tan lines with cycling just look too ridiculous.
