I have a crazy idea about setting up a team to raise awareness , a little bit like Team Type 1, but I need to know the levels of teams/pro tour etc so I can plan how to pitch my idea, has anyone got a link with more info ?

Thanks

    Pitch your idea to who?

Anyway, this will give you an idea at a very high level of what you need

    Pro tour
    Pro continental
    Continental

I think that's the order. Not sure what goes on below that level though.

Good luck - is the idea that it will be linked to awareness of obesity following on from your own efforts?

    Gaz,

I have no idea about your question, but I'm just reading your blog and the first two words that formed in my mind when I read you've lost 20 stone were 'Holy F*ck!'

Well done sunshine, an incredible, incredible effort.

Gaz, as much as I admire what you've achieved, if i'm being honest here i'm failing to see any true purpose to this. In terms of awareness i guess the idea with TeamType1 is that they're sending the message that with the correct diet and management of the disease, extraordinary or at least normal lives can be led. That management of the disease is a truly specialist knowledge which is clearly not being utilised widely enough (negative attitudes of medical professionals). Same with LA and cancer in respect that the disease is more manageable when diagnosed early in most cases. It's not just a case of 'look, Cancer/Type 1 Diabetes exists, and we need to be aware'.

I guess with obesity, for one it's not a disease. There are no specialist medical steps to preventing or curing obesity - ie we all know it's about too much food and too little excercise.

Good luck in any case. I hope you understand i'm just trying to be honest but i'm keenly aware (ironically) that i may be wrong.

but that is where (I feel) most people need educating.

Is being an Alcoholic or a drug addict not a disease ?

To lose weight , its not just as simple as telling someone to "eat less & move more" I am of course referring to the Morbidly Obese here I should say.

For me & i'd say everyone else who was/is morbidly obese the revelation was that I had mental health issues, sure I knew that, but it wasnt till I sat down and looked at how I was gonna lose 20+ stone did I realise how much it was affecting me.

So in the same way Team Type 1 get the word out about controlling diabetes, i'd like to do the same with obesity, while the theory of not being overweight is simple , there is just so much more behind it that I feel people need to know.

For this to really work you'd probably need to use riders who were at one stage pretty obese would you not? That's how you'd send the message that obesity is something you can get over. That's going to be quite hard.

Before you'd begun losing weight would a cycling team have been the best way to communicate the message to you? Or are you now a cycling fan because you got into cycling to lose weight?

The next question is, did you ever want to be as skinny as a pro cyclist? Most non-cyclists would answer no. So it's perhaps not appropriate to use pro cyclists to communicate to the obese.

Lots of people out there lose dramatic amounts of weight and complete personal challenges that would have previously seemed impossible to them. But it tends to be people like us (on sports forums) that hear about it more than those who are worried about how dangerously over weight they are.

Sounds to me like your message would be better delivered by raising awareness of all of those efforts than it would by creating a cycling team.

Assuming cycling is the right way to promote your cause, it depends whether you wish to promote just in this country or internationally.

If it’s UK, then you could do it through an amateur team providing it was good enough to get into the main domestic races. This reduces costs significantly as they are limited to mainly bikes, kit, entries, team car, travel & accommodation etc. and a team of about 8 -10 riders.( eg http://www.teamukyouth.co.uk/site/index.php).

If however, you wish to go beyond the UK you need to go in at the lower pro level (UCI Continental). You need a team capable of getting up the front of races to get exposure for the cause. This means a bigger team, salaries for better riders, far more expense on overseas travel, and flying foreign riders to races etc.
Endura Racing have taken this step in recent years and this article has interesting insights

I guess at Continental level with a split UK/International programme, and depending how serious you were in terms of the quality and frequency of overseas races, you could need between £500k and £million a year, or double the higher figure (ball park) if you wanted to go up a level to Pro Continental.
