Hi,

I'm looking at getting a Giant TCR Advanced (2010), and have seen it in the flesh. Its decent looking, but is very comfortable. Just looking at the pictures online, in some pice it looks like the top tube is extremely sloped (pic 1 & 2), and in some, it doesnt look as bad (3 & 4).

Am I imagining this?

It definitely slopes. Not that you can tell when you ride it.
  • I think he is asking if the top tube slopes at different angles on the same types of frames, or if the angle is always the same.

I don't personally have experience with these frames, but I would assume that for a particular size frame the slope angle should always be the same. It is probably just the angles of the pictures you are finding and other differences in the bike setups that makes it appear they have different angles to the slopes.

It slopes more on the smaller frames. Pictures 3 and 4 are larger sizes.

Have you ridden one? You claim it's very comfortable but do you know that? I suggest you do before purchase ... every frame is different and feels different of course.

In the bottom picture, the camera isn't level with the bike - you can see more of the rear wheel rim than the front.

In short - look up the geometries for the different sizes on the Giant website - but realistically, the angle of the top tubes should be pretty similar across all the sizes.

  • I would be taking a Medium sized frame. My LBS only has a M/L frame which is too big for me. I have tried a Medium frame in the TCR Composite, and that was very comfortable and a very nice fit. Its now a question of the TCR or a Wilier Izoard. Looking at the pictures, that slope looks very extreme in pic 1 especially, and would nearly put me off. I didnt notice it when checking out the M/L, but maybe its bigger in the medium frame

I've not ridden the latest TCR but my CF TCR of a few years ago is very comfortable. With the same kit as my 653 bike had on - it really soaked up the vibrations from grids and metalwork in the road.

By contrast my alu TCR is quite a bit harsher.

    +1

I have one (M/L) and it's excellent. I'd prefer a non-aero seatpost so I could tweak the comfort by using different posts but other than that it's great.

  • Just looking at it now, the front wheel of the 1st one looks a bit closer to the camera, which would obviously make the tube look more slanted. Or am I seeing things?

Other than the pics, has anyone else noticed that the small/medium frames are a lot more sloped? I would have thought that all geometries would have been identical no matter the size

Smaller frames slope more, bigger frames less. On a medium the TT points towards the top of the tyre. Smaller frames point down more as they join a shorter seat tube so they have to point down more!

One technique is to listen when people post replies, or just completely ignore them

Clearly not! It wasn't even advise, but an answer to the question. You don't buy a compact frame if you think a sloping top tube looks 'bad', and it slopes more on the M than the M/L he tried.
