Heading up to the lake district for a few nights with the missus next week. We are camping close to Grizedale, and I was planning to sneak away one or two mornings for a blast. I've never really seen the place mentioned much on here, was just wondering what its like? How hard are the trails, are any of the routes better or worse than others? Hopefully get the chance to ride most of them, but that depends on how much "play time" I can get....

    There's only one dedicated red-route and that's the North Face trail. There's a network of fireroads and loads of good natural stuff easily missed if you've not been before. The NFT trail is your usual trail centre red-route type fodder starting at the Visitor centre.

    Some cracking bridleways in and around Grizdale :lol::lol: Spent 5hrs there couple of weeks ago
    What campsite? Can have a look at the map and let you know what is good to do
    One for starters http://www.bogtrotters.org/route/showro ... p?route=74
    A trip to Biketreks in Ambleside via Hawkshead and Ironkeld bw would be fun. Coffee and return via Tilberthwaite, maybe a bit far if short on time :roll:

    Never been but have been told the northface is fairly easy. Would be worth trying some natural stuff imho. If you have time, try the helvellyn range

    All the Lakes bike shops have printed maps of the best rides available for £2 or so.
    Depends on how yoy plan getting to Grizdale you could stop off here;

    dan..read the OPs post again, he is too far from Helvellyn for a morning ride.

    The nearest Lakes "classic" is Walna Scar. Start/finish @ Grange to make it a shorter route, not missing anything by doing this.

    The other Lakes classic is the Borrowdale Bash just up the road at Keswick.

    Beware the huge carpark charge if you park at Grizedale Visitor Centre. There are other carparks dotted around where there is no charge - you can then just ride up to the start proper.
  • Try a mountain biking guide book for the Lake District. There are good routes for Grizedale in those.

    This is the latest guide to the area

    Moor top just up from Hawkshead is good. Join the NF trail that takes you down to the visitor centre if you need to.
    Boggle Crag just down from the centre is another

    Thanks for the info chaps. Just got back from a very wet couple of days in the lakes. Grizedale was brilliant, like nothing I have ever ridden (I'm pretty green to it all).

    Ended up cycling a few of the bridleways and did the North Face this morning. I loved it, but christ I thought I would rattle my teeth out my head. Its harder than anything I've been used to, and even harder on my fairly cheap Hardrock and suntour fork...

    Heartbreaking to be back to my flat routes in Lincoln :(
