Time Pedals Failed

Hi,
I have been using time impact pedals for a few years now. I was out on my racing bike last week when the right pedal came off causing me to crash. After I had picked myself up I went to retrieve the pedal as I thought it had sheared off only to find it had simply unscrewed from the crank arm. I though this couldnt happen as they were opposite threads!? I felt no play in the pedals prior to the crash to suggest they were coming loose and have never had this problem before. I check them every so often to make sure they havent become seized! Im a bit disgruntled to say the least. Has anyone heard of anything similar? and/or is it just my not checking them enough?

are you sure the crank hasnt failed somehow and the threads have been pulled out. i cant belive you wouldnt notice a pedal unscrewing that far. you cant say the pedal has failed if its simply come undone.
  • Im of the same opinion that I would have noticed it unscrewing. I screwed the pedal back on and cycled the 20+ miles back home without a problem, though admittedly I wasnt pushing it. Failed was prob a poor choice of words.....though didnt know what else to put!

do the bearings have much drag? i can only think if it unscrewed at the same speed as the pedals turning it would come out pretty quickly. theyre threaded to counteract something called precession , it seems strange because they will actually loosen if turned in the same direction as the pedals, they wont tighten automatically as i first thought. the right hand thread is on the right hand side of the bike and the pedal turn anticlockwise in use.
