Im looking at getting one of these Charge Spoons that everyone raves about. Its available in leather too, which leaves me wondering what the advantages are over the standard item?

I like them, I got mine off ebay for £22.50 about a week ago. They do split opinion - but I can only speak from experience and I'm happy with mine!

It might not suit you. Just because it was 'all the rage', doesn't mean you will get on with it. Sold mine after thinking the same.

If you want a real leather saddle, go for a Brooks and break it in.

If you go for a Brooks, I hope you enjoy suffering

The breaking in time and pain is much exagerrated.

People buy Brooks because they are comfier than most other saddles - otherwise there is no point in buying one as they weigh a ton!

(I have a B17N on one bike and it is like a sofa, a total fit and forget jobbie)

I think the thread lurched off onto Brooks because you called it 'leather saddles?' whereas you obviously meant to title it 'plastic saddle with superficial leather trim?'

I can't see the point in paying double the money for the 'leather' spoon as opposed to the standard ti one.

I see, but this is the Road Beginners forum? Thats all I wanted to hear to be honest, i'll go with the standard one, therefore if its not comfy for me its not such a hit to take.

PS Sorry if my tone was a bit arsey. I meant it slightly tongue in cheek - but yes, I wouldn't pay a premium for a leather covered saddle personally.

I suppose leather is supposed to be more breathable than artiificial seat covers?

I don't think it really is when sat on a plastic hull. I would agree that Brooks are pretty breathable though.

I had a leather ti spoon and thought it was great - until I bought my brooks swift. The swift was instantly more comfortable, and is continuing to get more so. The spoon got retired onto my shopping bike, and now I really dont get on with it.

I'd still rate them higher than an arione or modern flite however having had both prior to the spoon.

To the question of "advantages of leather Charge Spoon". Leather seems to be more durable than most of the synthetics I've seen on other saddles. Different materials or even different types of leather each have a different feel to them such as slick or grippy, so it's basically just personal preference comfortwise. You just have to put your ar*e to work to find the perfect mate.

Just to add a bit extra here. I had a leather spoon on one road bike, and a synthetic one on another for a while. Both feel totally different. A friend has one of each on his mountain bikes too and drew the same conclusion. In both instances we far preferred the leather ones! They are not the same.
