How noisy is it supposed to be? I picked my new bike yesterday and the Ultegra freehub is significantly noisier than the freehub on my 2011 105 freehub.

Never had Ultegra before so not sure if this is normal or not.

Ta

Yes, 6700. I'll go for a spin on it this afternoon and see how it is. If it persists it'll be going back to Primera.

You talking about freehub or cassette?

Freehub depends on the wheels. Some are noisy some are not. Clicky/buzz sound when you're not pedalling. Some of these can be made quieter by disassembling them and putting a ton of lube in them (but be careful what type lube as you don't want it to go gungy and make the pawls sticky). If you're saying you have an Ultegra freehub then you must have Ultregra wheels. Shimano wheels/freehubs are on the whole really silent.

Cassette's don't make noise... unless they're loose (try move the cogs with your fingers) or your chain isn't lubed enough or if it's one of those silly SRAM Red Powerdome ones which are hollow = complete racket.

Forgive me, I'm still learning the terminology. I have an Ultegra cassette on Mavic Askium wheels. The noise is when the wheel is free spinning, so that's from the wheel rather than the cassette?

That'll be the wheel. All Mavic wheels are reasonably loud. Most importantly - It's completely normal and nothing is wrong.

It can be made quieter by disassembling and putting some oily lube in there (not too thick otherwise it'll clog the pawls and won't engage). You have to take the cassette off to do this so you'll need the special tools. Once it's off it's just 2 4mm allen keys and off it slides.

Probably best to take it to the LBS if you want that done. Maybe ask them to show you how it's done. It's not a difficult job once you know how. Plus the tools aren't particularly expensive (Lockring tool, Chainwhip, Spanner and maybe a rubber mallet if it's tight).

to back up what ekemike has said - i have some aksiums and they make a solid 'ticking' noise - i quite like it, though, so wouldn't want to lbs it away :D
