Another idiot guide required

Following on from your very successful answering to my 'idiot guide to front derailleur' thread, I now have another pressing problem.

The re mech (campag veloce) is 'off/rough'.

The initial problem was changing gear, mainly down, around the middle cogs.
It was taking a good few seconds, jumping or missing the change entirely, plus noisy.

I've followed the video, and as I type I have the gear cable released, the barrel adjuster tightened to the max, and so far have twice reconnected everything, quarter turned the b/a until its been close, but as yet, I still can't find a 'sweet spot'.

So far the problem is still centred around shifting back down towards the smallest cog.

Please help, and don't be fooled by the competence of the description, I just copying the words used by the man in the vid, so keep it idiot please.

    sounds like cable tension.

again Parktools have a good guide.

If the downshift isn't working / delayed, then it's often due to cable drag i.e. frayed, kinked or dirty cables. Also check that the mech is clean of crud / pivots freely.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • how many miles has the bike done, including shifters? what year are mechs and shifters?

I persisted and finally found a 'good enough/better than was' setting.

Sadly for me I feel Monty might be ride, it certainly needs a proper clean up.

    It's a 2007 Bianchi 928 C2C, which has done a few 1000 miles.
  • for me it was on 2006 veloce levers. same symptoms and solution was servicing the shifters. it's an easy job and there's videos on youtube on how to do it. there's two small springs that wear but being campag means that you can get spares and service them.

however, they normally last about 10k miles before you get any problems at all. it can also be the grease on the ratchet associated with these springs drying out.

MOst annoying thing is having to remove bar tape.

new cable inners and outers can help, or just flushing the outers with GT85 then relubing with some teflon grease.

    It's the G-spring (not joking) http://www.campyonly.com/howto/ergo_rebuild.html
