New rear wheel?

Hello.
Just noticed this morning that my rear wheel has a bit of play. I bought the bike second hand last year, and noticed then that the rear wheel also has a flat spot, but I figured I'd replace the wheel when I had to.
The rims are WTB Laserdisc Trail, and the hub is Laserdisc Lite. I decided to get the wheel off and have a look, and whoever put the cassette on needs a clip around the lughole. I've never known a lockring tightened so tight. After a bit of help from my dad, we managed to free it up, but the freehub appears to be pretty chewed up from someone's previous 'mechanic skills'.
I'm not sure whether the wheel is worth saving, and figured I'll bite the bullet and replace it, but I don't want to spend a fortune. I know you get what you pay for, but I haven't got the spare cash to spend on a really good rear wheel (Hope hubs etc.)n
Ahyone got any good recommendations for a decent rear wheel that won't crumble at the first sight of a rock? I don't do anything too manic, but I would like a wheel that is strong enough to hold up, and won't break the bank.
