Cross tyres on a fixie...

Is it possible to put 'cross tyres on a standard cheap fixie? Will they fit the wheels ok? Will there be a problem with clearance?

Depends on the bike - what are the clearances like? What tyres does it have at the moment?

Yup, down to the frame / brake clearances - most 'road' frames wil take 25mm max, whereas touring frames with deep-drop brakes might stretch to 28mm or 32mm - few modern bikes with caliper brakes have enough clearance for a CX tyre. Might be worth popping into your LBS and asking to try a wheel.
FWIW fixed-CX requires a wholly different outlook on riding and front-wheel overlap creates all sorts of grief on the technical stuff -it's fun though, but wouldn't try it in a race.

If using CX tyres on roads they might not exactly going to provide the best of grip when cornering.

Thanks guys. I was after something fixed (low maintainence) that I could follow my son when he goes "off road" in the parks and forests, so thought of a cheap fixie then swap the tyres. Sounds like I need to get a MTB or CX conversion though...

Sounds like a Planet-X Pompino would fit the bill perfectly - you can pick up a frame & forks for £100.
