Been looking at the 7 Stanes this summer, does that area suffer from midges and if so are there any best times to go to avoid them.

IME experience the midges aren't as bad as further North, but you still get eaten. Best time to avoid them is winter

Buy some Avon Skin so Soft moisturiser, the best midge repellant available (bike shops up here sell it in Summer).

Kirroughtree is fine for the midges as long as you keep on the move or if there is a breeze... just don't stop for too long otherwise you will be eaten alive by the little blighters... would imagine it will be the same for the rest of the 7stanes routes.... 8) 8)

when moving you just don't suffer from them, however if stationary they can be a right pain

Fort Bill is horriffic for them and flys when it's hot but most for the 7 (really 9) stanes is not too bad

Second reccomendation for Skin so soft - its works a treat!

Its not too bad in the open when there is a breeze but dont stop under trees or near water.

+loads for Avon Skin So Soft but dont get it anywhere near a waterproof breathable membrane like Goretex it stops it being waterproof.

I got well and truly chewed on last year at Kirroughtree, even the "Tropical" stength bug spray wasn't keeping them totally at bay!

Didn;t see a single midge when I was at Glentress/Inners for a week. But Coed y Brenin in summer is absolutely horrendous, particularly on the Tarw side of the valley for some reason.

Midgies are a distinct possibility May-Sept (July and Aug worst), especially when it's warm and calm. They are worst in early morning and evening, but can still be active any time of day especially when it's cloudy. They don't like direct sun, so if you can find a sunny spot, stand in that! Another tip is, if there's a slight breeze, always make sure you're facing into the breeze so they don't annoy your face so much.

  • There was one here at the weekend.

    Think it's autumn now.
