How about this then.....out towards Huddersfield from Sheffield maybe, up Holme Moss,.......

Just to clear up any confusion, Holme Moss is in Yorkshire and not the Peak District.

    Pedant alert...

Climb from Holmfirth side crosses into Peak District methinks near Holme, before the summit.

Just got back from a quick loop, only short but did Blaze Hill and the lovely cobbles in Kettleshulme.

Blaze hill was good, lovely smooth road surface. The cobbles were, interesting... Loved the sign at the bottom "Unsuitable for motors", left me thinking "Thats ok because im a machine!" It didnt feel 30% to me, my garmin only recorded 21.5% which felt about right.

Hoping to do the big ride on Sunday morning.

Can I join the pedantry? Yorkshire is some counties. The Peak District is a National Park. You can't compare them like that just because you think (wrongly) that all of the Peak District is in one county (Derbyshire?).
Anyway, they overlap (including at some of Holme Moss).
  • Rode the route myself on Sunday with some mates who were up from London and wanted me to show them some hills.... hadn't done it for a while and forgotten what a fun route it was...

    toughest climbs...

    1) Jenkins Chapel to Pym's Chair... sucks you in at the bottom and then kicks you in the teeth at the top.
    2) Dolly Lane... last climb on the route and gets viciously steep at the top.
    3) First one out of Chinley through Wash and up to above Sparrow Pit... no chance to warm up and goes on and on.

    Hill 2 - 20.9%
    Hill 3 - 19.1%
    Hill 4 - 13.6%
    Hill 5 - 23.8%
    Hill 6 - 15.9%
    Hill 7 - 11.7%
    Hill 8 - 10.4%
    Hill 9 - 12.3%
    Hill 10 - 21.3%
    Hill 11 - 23.5%
    Hill 12 - 25.0%
    Hill 13 - 20.5%
    Hill 14 - 15.2%
    Hill 15 - 16.3%

Oh and to add.... What a route! I knew most of the climbs but there are some nice hidden gems in there. The killer for me was at 37.5 miles. I was buggered at that stage, still dont know how I managed it back in one piece hence the walking pace average speed

Just jumping in here - but did anyone mention Cromford Hill? that thing looks like a complete nightmare - one of those never ending hills. You could then hang a right at the top and head towards Ashbourne through Kniverton (which is a hell of a drop down and up again) then turn right when you get to Ashbourne and head towards Buxton on the 515 - that climb out of Ashbourne is a little sod.

Fast hills on a fast road if you want something different.

    Guys,

I have just started to really get into cycling and would like your opinion on this route i did on Sunday, it was very warm but very windy.

Is this ok, in terms of speed for the hills i did on it (some registered at 23%)?

Just trying to get an idea of where i am fitness wise.

    cheers

Difficult to compare directly but my favourite routes manage about 500m climb per 25km and Im happy with speeds of 22-25kph on average so Id say you are doing well compared to me :)

Compared to the Schlek's you probably arent !!

Are you from Somercotes then ? Only my missus is from Somercotes. Hard to comment on average speed - quite a lot of the route is very urban isn't it - the run into Alfreton and the route you back home down Quarry Rd etc so I imagine that slowed you down - I'm sure you could found a nicer route !

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

    Christ, small world eh?

I am on Somercotes Hill, just down from Windmill rise, my back garden backs onto houses on windmill rise.

I hope the brother aint the scumbag with the barking dog who always argues with his missus at incredible decibel levels!!

Haha - no he lives in the sheltered housing bungalows on the road off to the left - lot of argumentative blokes with loud dogs in Somercotes though !
