How to keep cool?

edited April 2011 in Commuting general
I have been cycling throughout the winter in shorts, a long-sleeved thermal top and a long-sleeved cycling top (and when aprticularly cold a light-weight waterproof).
Now the temperature has picked up to around 16 degrees (at commuting times) I have reduced this to just shorts and a short sleeved cycling top, however I am still sweating buckets. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can keep cool?, especially with summer on it's way!!

Oh, and I am 6' and weigh 11st. Therefore this is not due to excess weight on my part

  • Shades. May have no discernable effect on temperature, but by golly, I always look cool 8)

Pedal harder so you go faster thus creating more airflow thus cooling you down.

Other than layer down, and drink plenty of fluids, not much else you can do.

Just remembered...helmets are good at keeping strong sun off your head whilst allowing air on.

Layer down - right will get sander out tonight and take top layer of skin off - will post back on how beneficial this is!!

Helmet - it's not even sunny at the moment, just increase in temperature!!

Does anyone know where I can locate some cycling sandals?! :D

I don't use a 'cycling' type top as they often seem to have poor airflow, I just use what would be a base layer type T-shirt, I get sweaty when I'm swimming so I need to do all I can to keep cool.

Seriously though - just man up for a few days and then yor body will re-tune to summer weather

If you're putting some effort in, you can't avoid getting hot.

Most of it's already been said, other than keep drinking plenty of water there's not that much you can do. In the summer (in fact from about now till about october) I tend to wear a short sleeve base layer type t-shirt and a gillet, shorts and my normal shoes.

Shades are a good call though, you've got to look cool for all your scalped victims!

If you want a top with better air-flow , try this

It should go a treat with your white socks and sandals look.

I find i am much cooler when I dont have to take a backpack.

I try leaving stuff at work that I need (take cloths in a day in advance). if you have to carry a lot each day then a rack might be a good idea if your bike can take one.

LOL, just an indication of how prone to being sweaty I am, sweaty when swimming, practically drowning on the bike!

Try a long sleeved, wicking compression base layer.

It sounds counter intuitive to wear more to keep cool, but the wicking material wicks sweat away from your skin, spreads it more evenly over a larger area and allows it to evaporate more efficiently, thus keeping you cool. I say a compression base layer as the material needs to be in contact with your skin in order to work effectively.
I think wicking materials are witch craft. Your skin stays dry, the inside of the material is dry but the outside of the material is wet. Amazing stuff.

Think how little evaporation happens when a trickle of sweat runs down your back. Now compare if that amount of sweat was spread over a large area of material and how much evaporation could happen then.

Sweating is good imo, will keep you cooler than if you didn't. I guess its just about wearing the right gear as EKE suggests.

Thick wooly jumper, snorkel parka done all the way up and waterproof extreme ski pants for a few days till yr body acclimatises to sweating less in that then down to the usual and hey presto.

You could try heat homeopathy otherwise. Sit 150yards from a radiator that used to be on and the memory of heat will cure your sweating.

Seriously tho as a plan b to a compression layer, you could try a merino wool top. Won't stop the sweating but is a much nicer garment to sweat in for you and everyone else as the fibres don't hold the aroma as normal tops do
  • This has to be one of the most amusing threads I have seen on here yet.

I over heat badly when riding too. Base layers are brilliant.

I usually go for a base layer with a high wicking outer layer too. I picked up 2 high wicking outer layers from tresspass the other week there. They were meant to be £22.95 so was going to get one but then they came up at the counter so I got another one too :D

If you are feeling keen, the Endura MT500 Burner Jerseys are excellent but a bit of an investment. The 3/4 length sleeve version works wonders in the spring.

You obviously haven't found Speed_King's "BE WARNED!!!!" thread. Find it and read all of it. It's well worth it!

edit: Found it for you. Enjoy

If you find yourself laughing out loud at your desk and getting funny looks from your colleagues, blame Wiggle.

Speed_King's follow-up thread "DO SOMETHING!!!!" is funny too.
