can any of you tell me from your own experience of a single layer long sleeved jersey that would suit the cooler spring mornings/evenings without a base layer but would not be too warm as the day warmed up. Would like something that is quality and would last, so money not 'too' much of an issue to get this right, I don't live close enough to a decent bike shop to just pop down for advice unfortunately - cheers

  • I swear by a good base layer more than a jersey...wick sweat away from you but will keep u warm enough when its chilly....endura merino are reasonably priced (37.99) and work a treat i use these all year round.

Baselayer + s/s jersey + arm warmers + windproof gilet will work much better and you can pop the gilet back on if it rains.
    More problems but still living....

Thanks good advice tho' not sure about the base layer armwarmer gillet route as i don't much like stopping once on a ride and was hoping for a one fix jersey solution

I'm wearing one of these at the moment:

    http://www.cervorosso.com/index.php?sec ... oductId=23

Since receiving it I have worn it on every ride with different base layers to cope with varying conditions.
I find that because it's made of sportswool it adapts well to varying temperatures and stays smart after repeat washes. It's the best long sleeve jersey I've ever had!
For a review of the Cervo Rosso kit see my blog.

(Disclaimer: The Cervo Rosso kit was provided to me free of charge as i have been lucky enough to be selected as an official tester for the brand. However the review is impartial and I hope gives the true picture).

I'm finding the Aldi jerseys are perfect right now. Just warm enough in the mornings and cool enough with the zip open in the afternoon.

They're cheap, but you need to get lucky with regards to them being in stores.

I just bought this bontrager one

    http://www.actionbikes.co.uk/bontrager- ... y-red.html

on its own its just right on an average day but with a base layer its nice and toasty, has a few nice features as well like a thick gripper round the waist and a zip pocket on the back for valuables

I do like the traditional styling of those, do you need to wear a gillet if a cool wind blowing tho? are they the same material throughout or do they have windproof fronts/breathable backs?
Re the Aldi, have worn and still do wear them, but really want a more technical top that covers as many bases as possible - cheers

I've found a long sleeve jersey (Foska in my case) and a windproof gilet do the job well. It's my trunk that feels the cold, rather than my arms.

It's made from Merino Perform (sportswool) throughout so is exceptionally breathable and seems to perform well in a range of temperatures. If it's windy and wet I've tended to wear a light race cape or a gilet over the top. When cold i've used a merino base layer.
During the cold of winter I used a Gore Oxygen windstopper jacket with a base layer, but for Spring the Cervo Rosso jersey has been an ever present. On a personal level, I've never been sure about jerseys with windproof fronts because I think they lack the versatility of a standard jersey and a gilet.

Went out last Sunday for the first time in my new Gore Xenon jersey (and matching Xenon Sonic bib shorts) and it was perfect. Ride started at about 8 degrees, and ended at about 14 degrees, and at no point was I either cold or hot. Has vents on both arms and both joints between sleeve and chest if needed. Available at £129, and worth every penny in my opinion.

  • From about 3 weeks ago I go with a mid season base layer with a SS jersey - I often feel a bit chilly for the first few miles but that soon goes away. I made the mistake of going out in my DHB Windslam L/S earlier this week as it was really chilly but after 10 miles I looked like Phil Mitchell - bright red face, sweating cobs and generally feeling uncomfortable. That jersey has been put back in the drawer for next winter where it is excellent.

Why would you have to stop? :?

If you don't wear the gilet you effectively have a l/s jersey, but with the option of rolling the armwarmers down or taking them off if it warms up, which is easy without stopping (doesn't even require riding no-hands). Even a gilet is easy to take off without stopping. If you go for the gilet + armwarmers then you've at least got some flexibility if it gets warmer, where as with a l/s jersey you're stuck with it for the ride.

The Gore xenon or bontrager options sound good, but also armwarmers/gillet as something i've never dabbled in may be worth a try... decision time

Or if I wear a l/s baselayer then I wouldn't wear arm warmers.

There was another thread running recently about jerseys. A helpful person recommended the company TORM www.torm.cc

Sportswool material and with an uncanny resemberlence to Rapha.
Mine came through last night, ordered on Monday. Very nice indeed. £49 with post and packaging. Large was a nice close fit for 40'' chest and 32'' waist.
They also do long sleeved versions. Fairly substantial material, great for this time of year.
I'm rather pleased as they seem like a bit of a bargain.

Thanks all, some interesting thoughts, has certainly got me thinking about the arm warmer/gillet route, have a day in York tomorrow so will try some options at bike shops - thanks again

+1 on TORM. I bought a long sleeve jersey in February and it was great with a long sleeve base layer in the colder weather.

Now it is warmer, I'm wearing a pair of their arm warmers with a short sleeve top. At £15 a pop they are great.
