I'm looking to get a road bike for commuting and hopefully buiding up to a sportive event at a later date. As recommended I have sat on a number of bikes to see which suits.

Unfortunately I have 3 which I like and which seem comfortable for me and wondered if anyone had any suggestions or personal experiences of the following

All are in a similar price bracket, and with a limited knowledge of frames, gears, wheels etc i'm not sure which is thought to be the best.

Thanks in advance

  • If it was me then I would the Specialized but that is only because I like red/black bikes.

Seriously they are all good bikes and if you like to ride all of them then so pick the one that you like the colour of. You will enjoy it even more if you are proud of it!

They're all good bikes so if I were you I'd try them out and see which one you like the most. Just one thing: I don't see anywhere on the site if the Giant is double or compact (I don't recommend it if it's a double). The other 2 are triples which is fine (although I prefer compact).

Surely you could get something with a better groupset than Sora for £725.

Have you looked at Ribble etc?

I have ridden giants for a few years and always been happy, my son has the trek 1.2 and likes it a lot - personally I don't like specialized.

today if it was my money i'd buy the trek I prefer the frame

    Hi Youngy,

I have the Specialized and can recommend it for its smooth ride, comfortable frame geometry and quality of build. A friend of mine has the Trek and has had a few issues with it mechanically (all fixed for free by his LBS though). They are all meant to be good bikes so try and get a test ride and then choose. Failing that go for the one that you like the look of! ... guess you'll be getting the 'Spesh' then!

I have the Trek and so far i really like it. Rides nicely, looks good (as i've treid to keep it shiney & white), Though I do now want to start changing various bits & pieces on it like wheels, tyres, saddle to improve it & make it more confortable/quicker, but frame/componanst wise all is good
  • I'm sure I've said it before and I'll say it again, get a B'Twin Sport 3 from Decathlon. Hydro formed aluminium frame with carbon seat stays, carbon fork, 10-speed Campagnolo with a triple chainset and all for just £599. Bargain.

^+1 - you might get bike snobs looking down their nose but you get a hell of a lot of bike for the cash. Their Mountain Bikes are similar, you'd be looking at +£200 for a similar spec 'big name' bike.

your best bet is to get to you LBS and try them all, i was looking at a similar range but each respective model below.

tried them all but in the end found the trek (in my case 1.1) fitted me the best

Got one of these as a first road bike, mainly for commuting. Bargain I reckon, and comes with 105 for under £600 at the moment!
