Firstly my apologies if this has already been asked recently but I did search and couldn't find anything suitable.

My brother wants to get a cheap hard tail mountain bike within the above price bracket for his birthday at the end of the month. Do any of the bikes around this price have a reasonable spec?

I myself have a Rockrider 8.1 (2009 model) and wondered if one of the cheaper Decathlon bikes might be a sensible buy? Something like the 5.2 perhaps

Or one of these from halfords:

Thanks in advance and my apologies if this is a little too low spec for this forum.

At this price point £100 will mean the difference between an ok bike & a good base to upgrade upon. The 5.2 IMO is only really suitable for the odd bit of tow path riding & the apollo is quite frankly a BSO to be avoided. The only full susser I'd contemplate at this price range is the rockrider 6.3 though the gears are lacking a bit on the 2010 model from the previous years SRAM X5 9 speed set up. I had one of the earlier models & they really do punch above their weight :D

At the top end of your budget I'd personally be looking at the rockrider 5.3. The GT Avalanche 3.0 disc (cable) from Pauls (£50 more would get him hydro's over cable brakes) or possibly the Carrera Vulcan are also worth looking at.
