Choosing the correct ratio for a s/s 29er?

I went out this morning on a 25mile ride which was a blend of road, track and rocky paths over the moors using only one gear all the way round. I was in the middle ring at the front(32) and the forth upwards at the rear(17) I think! It felt ok, but I'm wondering what other 29er users are using for single speed 29er gearing!
