Pelotons

Was out today with the sun and so were loads of other cyclists which was good.
However when I reached the sticks I got on to single track road (like with passing places) and was steaming along at a good rate when I see this oncoming peloton. Must have been 20 at least riding on both sides of the road.
The weird thing is that they gave no sign whatsoever of seeing the lone cyclist heading towards them! I gave them a wave quite early, but no response at all. It was bit like a ghost peloton
In order to pass them I was squeezed right over as they made no attempt to single up in any way.
Now I can understand that the body of the peloton may not have looked too far ahead, but surely the leaders should have warned the pack?
I reckon if I was in that pack and suddenly an oncoming cyclist appeared with very little room I'd be a tad peeved with the guys in front!
Anyway, I'd say that kind of behaviour gives clubs a bad name.

i was approaching 2 cyclists riding side by side on a single track road today and the guy on my side didn't move in. he'd clearly seen me but just stayed where he was and looked confused when he was called a prick.
i do find it strange when groups of cyclists have no sense of etiquette. a group of around 40 or so i rode with about a month ago didn't have a clue about pointing out pot holes. eventually it resuted in 6 of them hitting the same pot hole and getting 8 punctures between them. by that time i was up the road with another 2 guys who were sick of late darts to avoid holes and knowing the crap surface ahead moved off the front, after warnign everyone the surface was crap so they needed to point out holes."Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0 -
Does this have owt to do with racing ?0

Could do - they weren't on tourers, no beards in sight and were giving it welly.0 -
If you think they were racing or behaving in a dangerous fashion, why not report the incident to the club in question. The Club secretaries won't be too pleased ill bet :shock:0

Yeah, just interested to hear people's thoughts on here, but that sounds reasonable. The weird bit was that they showed no sign of having seen me. Still a close pass even if they had and rude with it, but if they hadn't a lot of us could very easily have hit the deck.0

Nah ! Been in some fast moving races and the pot holes have still been pointed out.
It's because nobody does club rides that much anymore and consequently they don't learn the etiquette of group riding.
After all, they are "Racers".........3 grand bike...30 Bob legs....Slowing with style0 -
The thing to remember too is during racing, it is every man for himself. If you hit someone then its you as the racer that is at fault, not the marshalls or organisers. Marshalls have no right to stop traffic only alert them that a race is taking place and even then it is at the discretion of the driver whether or not to stop. There was meant to be a law/bill passing soon to give marshalls more power but I don't know if this has materialised. So if one of them had mowed you down (assuming it was a Live road) you would be within your rights for compensation.

Depends - the police have delegated powers to accredited marshalls in Wales (and Essex I believe?).0 -

Yes, and it's currently being extended to Norfolk and Suffolk as well as the police there have refused provide offircers to stop traffic for races now.0 -
Sorry to hear about that exeperience. There is something about how alot of people's attitude change when riding in a group.
I think most responsible clubs are strong on promoting good etiquette for club reputation. Unfortunately there are always ignorant Jerks present when out for a club run. Only takes 1 or 2 individuals to make the rest look bad.Plymouthsteve for councillor!!0 -

In terms of pointing out obstacles - people do try and shout / point in races / club rides etc in the UK, but not in Belgium - if you see the state of some roads, you'll know why.
I was riding in a pack in Belgium, there was a half-brick sized rock in the middle of the road - nobody pointed it out but I managed to swerve round it and flick a hand signal - the guy behind hit it straight on and went down hard.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
