I was servicing my bike Friday as the gears were out of sync so at the same time I changed to my new wheels and found two bent chain links so took them out however today 14 miles in my chain snapped looks like I didn't put the pin in properly
Will it be ok to take another link out or will the chain be to short?

  • You need to get a new chain and new cassette as your chain is worn out, that is my instant analysis!

They have omly done 300 miles so i hope not.
i was just unsure as to wether the gear changes would be ok in every gear with 3 links missing.

Your chain is likely too short already after taking two links out. This may have contributed to the chain breaking. You need to get a new chain.

You could probably use a SRAM powerlink to make the repair. They are designed for tool-free insertion and removal and take up the space of 1 link.
If you chain has damage elswhere its probably best to replace the whole thing and use a powerlink to join, they come free with SRAM chains. Parktools have a chain-length calculator.

Get a new chain and either install the pin properly or use a KMC missing link (my preference).

Get a quick-link and see if the chain is still long enough to go around the two big rings. You don't necessarily need a new chain and I'd say you definitely don't need a new cassette. No idea whyjamespiggot has said that :?

If you use your old chain as a guide for the length of the new one don't forget to add those 2 links you removed back in again.
