It would be nice to see a little more manners on the forum as well as out on the trail

cooldad you seem to have an opinion about everything and like to insult people and claim to be smart , but smart people do not insult others and like me keep there opinions to themselves.
Probably best to end this as it is getting silly, but I insulted john74 because of his moronic (in my opinion) statement.
He on the other hand insulted 80% of all riders, generally.
I also note that as a smart person who keeps their opinions to themselves, you expressed your opinion, which you are perfectly entitled to do. But you appear to have contradicted yourself without noticing.
As for opinions - I do have them, what a surprise. If no one had an opinion there would be no point in the internet as no one would have anything to say. I have never claimed to be smart, that appears to be a figment of your imagination, and I do not insult everyone, in fact I am quite nice to most of the people on here and elsewhere and try to he helpful.
But if I think someone is being a moron I will say so. You are quite entitled to disagree with me and agree with john74.
To prevent an escalation I will not state what I believe that makes you.

So, are you "smart" and keep your opinions to yourself, or are you opinionated, and want to share it?

It strikes me that there's a correlation between retardation, and the probability of saying "smart (or clever) people like me".

Just to restore order ... line up john74, 5xcr and those selfish irresponsible kids who endangered racing girl.

They either hand peel 5 tonnes of potatoes in a sweaty kebab shop or be lined up straight to receive a rear wheel -Tail whip- in their face!

5xcr, what's going on with mentioning someone's GT I-drive ? Do you really think make of a bike classifies rider? You may be surprised how furious that owner of the bike mentioned can ride, so please don't start war with bike snobs this n that.

If its any consolation, I saw a lad around the same age, acting in a similar way a few wees back at llandegla, barging past everyone, almost sending kids into ditches, and that was just on the route from the carpark to the skills area. He proceeded to ride into the skills area, barge past the queue of people waiting to have a go at the table tops and have a go himself. First table top he comes to hes eating welsh mud. One of the finest face plants Ive ever seen.

Not quite as cocky now are we :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
  • I find attitude problems from walkers and cyclists when I'm on the trails. Some of it is when you surprise them - they are walking same direction plugged into their gramaphone, or on a horse - I bell them from a distance which is non-confrontational. Some of the walkers facing me with their ugly dogs - you can see it in their faces - ' you are in MY SPACE..'

This happens a lot in the South Downs - when I'm battering down a hill - those facing me are obviously wheezing their way up the thing - but they don't sem to like it.

I always say good morning - sometimes you get growled at and sometimes your' oponent' just does not have the social skills to muster a response.

There is - and they seem to be related t the guys that op refers to - high speed tw@ on his bike coming in the opposite direction - thousand yard stare - you hve to move for him and he thinks his bike ride is a contest.

Incidentally I also live in Gambia where there are wild dogs living on the streets - I've never been chased - but this week I've had such two incidents in Essex.

I may be reading this wrong but it didn't come across to me that john74 was insulting everyone who rides on the weekend, just a certain type of rider that you can see on the weekend.

Which is only to be expected given that rider volumes increase hugely on the weekend when most of us have spare time to ride.

FWIW I've never been subjected to treatment like that, it sounds like the little girl had an encounter with an unpleasant set of riders, which reminds me to be mindful of others when I out on a quick run

I wouldn't recommend using a bell or any sort of signal at horse riders, just give them space and time to pass through. If you were on a horse, would you appreciate me accelerating towards you pulling out my sick tricks of manualing and bunny-hopping with stylish back flips to the sides?

Agh, don't get me started on horse riders.
There's a place up the road that specialises in supplying horses and riders for films and stunts. Their horses aren't spooked by cars, gunfire or explosions, and definitely not by bicycle bells.
So, surely it's possible to train a horse like that. I don't understand why people would even want to take a jumpy nervous creature capable of causing untold damage and injury along a road for a ride. Train the bloody thing properly, then you won't have to sneer at people, even as we're slowly inching past at less that walking speed, at tickover.

I commute past several horse farms and I wholly agree.

I have no problem with horses but their riders are awful, often 2 abreast, often aggressive towards cars they feel did not slow down or spooked the horse.

Not all of them are like this for sure, but enough that I really hate to encounter them on the road

What he says, Being a south wales lad we see alot of south england weekend warriors come over here, and alot that we meet have no manners at all, blocking whole trails by standing about in the middle of it. I've watched them break items on there bikes from poor prep(or lack of time to prep the bike) and they leave there mess on the trail.

I don't think all these weekend riders are bad , there are alot of very nice ones, but because there are so large a quantity of these types a rider it becoems very easy to veiw them all very similarly.

And to me it seemed that John was refering to these. There is rarely a need to insult on first read, And cooldad could of just inquired as to what he meant by it, instead of going into moron mode.

but in all areas of riding there are unpleasent types, with poor manners, all we can do is try to educate people in a calm as manner as possible.

We done then with this? :D

The Internet is great for reading too much, too little, but never quite exactly what was meant by what was said, and often sarcasm is lost entirely.

What exactly is a weekend warrior?

I only ride trail centres at weekends, because I don't have 2 (cannock) or 4-6(wales) hours +ride time free in the evenings after work. I ride local stuff and commute by bike during the week, but only 'proper' mtb at the weekends? Am I a warrior?

Or is weekend warrior just used as an insult that doesn't actually relate to when people ride?

Some people say its a guy who only rides at the weekend.

Some say its the guy who rides at the weekend and picks no end of fights, blocks ways and is generally annoying.

God knows who or what it is but we do know ... its not worth insulting some complete stranger over.

And Bails you are a weekend rider :p who we all want to hug n cuddle.

technically I think it refers to someone who only does sport on the weekend but in the context I understand it it implies someone who takes things over seriously, perhaps more seriously than someone who does the same thing professionally (i..e. special constable to police constable) and is a bit laughable as a result.

    Oh dear.

Can we just cool it, please? I wrote just to vent and on the exceedingly remote chance that they might recognise themselves and give it some thought in the future.

Whether these riders were weekend warriors who were selfish/thoughtless or whether they weren't weekend warriors, but were still selfish and thoughtless doesn't really matter, only that they were sel..... etc.
