How long is a campag rear derailleur outer cable?

I have shifting issues with my 2009 Centaur rear mech. Everything seems in order and is correctly adjusted, but still not right. The cable is not kinked and is fairly new (less than 6 months old), it is a genuine Campag Record Ultra-Low friction Ergopower cable.

I have heard that the rear outer should NOT be shortened as this can cause problems. What I want to find out is if mine has been shortened when fitted....so if anyone could give me an accurate measurement of that outer it would be appreciated and will allow me to ascertain if this is my problem.

Thanks

There is no accurate measurement as cable length depends on size and shape of bars, stem length, where you position the shifter and chainstay length. Every cable has to be shortened as they come in a generous length and you will have a foot or more hanging idle if you don't.

IF it is a cable issue, perhaps the loop to the rear mech is too tight or you have too tight an exit from under the tape to the DT stops? Check out photos of other bikes and compare.

Sorry, should have made myself clear. I meant the rear loop from chainstay to rear mech. This is the bit of outer that I have been told should not be shortened.

    Thanks again

Again, how long it should be depends on the frame and specially the position of the cable stop on the chainstay. You really have to look at the loop on your bike.

But yes, on many bikes I see, the rear loop is rather short and would run better if lengthened.

The OP is trying to determine, new out of the packet, how long the outer cable for the rear mech is as supplied by Campagnolo. He wants to see if his has been shortened at any point.

Correct, so if anyone could measure one and post that would be great. Many thanks.

  • On a 2009 Chorus 11 speed, and measured on the bike so give it +/- 10mm, it's about 350mm. I put it on myself and didn't touch it, honest.
