also the Giant XTC SE will be getting a disc rotor upgrade up to 180mm from 164mm when i fit the new forks as the calipers are post mount and the forks are IS mount.

so giant handily do a bracket for the job:

and last but not least, my girfriends new bike.

its only been on one trip and had a couple of niggles, but all seems to be sorted now.

it cost £300 new and is a great spec for the money as you can see. and it only weights 12.5kg or 27lbs.

the wheels might need changing at some point in the next year or two depending on how they wear but nothing extreme would be needed.
Frame - Alloy frame with Carbon fibre rear seat stays
Fork - Suntour Epicon Remote air 100mm
    Headset - Cane Creek integrated
    Chainset - Pro Wheel Raid
    Front Mech - Shimano DEORE
    Rear Mech - Shimano DEORE
Shifters - Shimano DEORE 27 speed integrated brake levers
Rims - A decent chinese rim
    Hubs - Quando hubs
    Cassette - unknown, apparently shimano
    Tyres - Kenda Kozmic lite's
    Brakes - Shimano DEORE Hydro
    Brake Levers - Shimano DEORE
    Handle Bar - Truvativ XR
    Stem - Truvativ XR
    Saddle - Velo
    Seat Pin - Truvativ XR
    Pedals - Alloy flats

If you're upgrading most of the transmission, why are you staying with 9 speed? Why not go to 10 speed if you can? The parts you absolutely need to do so are chain, cassette, rear mech, and right hand shifter.

    Nice bikes though, :)

i hadnt really thought about it TBH

would my 9 spd frame be able to take 10 speed?

after having a look at the componets, it would cost me an additional £90 to go to 10 speed.

as i would then need a 10 spd cassette for £50 and a chain for £30. then its £20 extra for the 10 sped chainset but £10 cheaper for a pair of the shiftes over 9 spd.

are the extra 3 gears worth it? as i noticed that the large chainring is smaller on 10 speed chainsets.

Nah, stick with 9 speed for a bit, i'm going to do so until 10 speed becomes more affordable.

And your girlfriend's bike was a bloody bargain for 300 notes!
